Duties of the Women • Women in nobility started their education at home around the age of 5. Dancing and music was an essential skill for them to learn, also learning a diverse number of languages such as Latin, French, Greek and Italian • John Knox said, “Woman in her greatest perfection was made to serve and obey man.” • A major expectation was to constantly produce children
Duties of Men • In the family they were the head of the household • Men were expected to support their families and provide • It was their job to raise the rank of the family • Men made the decisions and what they said was in a sense, law • If they were of high nobility they were expected to participate in court
Restrictions for Women • Women were not allowed to participate in politics, regardless of their status • Most women were still allowed to be educated but not permitted to attend universities. They could, however receive an education at home. • Women couldn’t enter professions such as lawyers, doctors and medicine, nor could they receive titles • They also abided by their husbands rules and had almost no input ; they were to be seen and not heard
Restrictions for men • Men did not have many restrictions • One of them was clothing restrictions. Men could not wear certain clothes made out of certain fabrics like silk, sable, any purple colored fabric, etc. unless they were high in rank
Marriage • It was legal for boys to marry at age 14 • It was legal for girls to marry at age 12 • The actual age of consent was 21 • Women believed they were inferior to men • Marriages were arranged to bring wealth to the family • Young men were treated similar to women • Women and men were expected to marry and have children
