Objective 7: • Ingestion = taking in of food and nutrients • Chewing = mastication of food and nutrients into a bolus using the mouth, teeth and tongue • Swallowing = movement of bolus past pharynx and into the esophagus to undergo peristalsis.
Obj. 8 • Saliva--made of mostly water w/ ions, proteins, amylase, lysozyme
Obj. 8 Cont. • Saliva’s function is cleanse mouth, moisten food, aid compactions, dissolve for taste, begin digestion.
9. Gastric Juices: • 3-4 L/day • HCl produced by parietal cells • Zymogenic cells secrete pepsin.
Obj. 10 Regulation • Cephalic phase- sight, smell • Gastric phase-stomach distension and pH • Intestinal phase-food reaches small intestine, stimulates
