  1. Sugar By: Holly Check Hour: 7 Chemical Name: sucrose Common Name: table sugar Synonyms: cane sugar or beet sugar Chemical Formula: C12H22O11 Formula Weight: molecular weight is 342.3 Common uses: in baking products, it's one of the most important components of medicine, it's used to slow down the setting of cement, it plays a role in leather tanning and paper dying, and prolongs the life of fresh cut flowers. History of Compound: It is thought to have originated in New Guinea, and was spread along routes to Southeast Asia and India. The process known for creating sugar, by pressing out the juice and then boiling it into crystals, was developed in India around 500 BC.

  2. Sugar Interesting Facts: • Some plants can make their own sugar— when a banana ripens, it changes starch into sugar, making it sweeter • In 2001, scientists found sugar in outer space! • Sugar prolongs the life of fresh cut flowers • Sugar cane stalks can reach 30 feet high! • Christopher Columbus introduced sugar to the New World in 1493 on his second voyage. Models of compound: http://www.edinformatics.com/interactive_molecules/3D/sucrose_molecule.htm Other interesting information: • There are many different types of sugar like Lactose, Sucrose , Fructose, Glucose, and Maltose. • Plants make glucose.

  3. Sugar • Physical Properties: a fine, colorless, odorless crystalline powder with a pleasing, sweet taste. • How is it made?: sugar cane has a porous membrane that fills the cell. This pulp is harvested and crushed to extract the juice inside. This liquid is then evaporated or cooked off and sugar crystals are left. • Read more: http://wiki.answers.com/Q/How_is_sugar_made_out_of_sugarcane#ixzz18sN8oqJF • Is it found in nature or man made?: Sugar canes naturally grow but men make sugar the way most of us see it, as table sugar. They boil it , wait for it crystallize, etc. • What does it react with?: potassium chlorate, Sulfuric acid, and other chemicals • Is it toxic, poisonous, radioactive?: no it is neither toxic, poisonous or radioactive…at least not in it’s table sugar form. • How much does it cost?: white sugar costs $0.378 per pound of sugar • Type of chemical bond?: table sugar is a covalent bond

  4. Sugar Model Pictures Wood Sugar: Xylitol (wood sugar) is a five-carbon sugar alcohol that is used as a sugar substitute. Glucose: one of many different types of sugar.
