  1. Word problems How to successfully solve them! Just follow the steps … (Check your placemat!)

  2. Read the problem • Reread and analyze • Find out what information you need • What do you need to find out (what is the problem asking) • 3. Make a plan – use your words – what are you going to do • 4. Make a math problem – translate words to math symbols • 5. Solve the problem --- do the math • Check your answer – does it make sense? • once you are sure it’s correct. Write the answer using a complete sentence.

  3. Let’s do one together. Mr. Downs drives a pony cart through Hillsboro every Saturday morning. He goes ½ mile to BP for a newspaper. He then travels another mile to Hardees for a breakfast sandwich and coffee. Mr. Downs then returns home. How many miles did the pony travel? What do we know? (everything) What do we want to determine? (What question is asked?) Now what do we need to know? (what is important)? What is the plan? – no math – just words. Now, make it a math problem. CHECK IT! Does it make sense? Solution:____ miles Mr. Downs traveled a total of 3 miles.

  4. Pair Check Structure: Should partners use sage and scribe method to solve first 2 problems. Then 2 sets of pairs (seated next to each other) get together and discuss the answers to these two problems. Make sure you give feedback in an appropriate manner. Include guidance when needed and praise when possible The two problems will be on the next screen. Make sure you write down each step.

  5. 1. A car travels at an average rate of 50 miles per hour for 3 hours. How far does the car travel? 2. You practice your musical instrument for 2 hours each weekday. Each weekend day, you practice 3 hours. How many hours do you practice in 4 weeks? Homework for this evening: Page 41 #3 #4 #5 Write each step – showing all work and thought process.
