Directions: With your deck of cards follow these directions: • Spread out the cards in front of you to look like the table (4 rows, and 13 columns). Are all of the cards there? • Organize them as best you can! • Put an X in any of the boxes on your SN table to represent where you HAVE a card. (X=Card) • In the GAPS of your SN table, write/draw a PREDICTION of what you would expect to see in that spot if you had all of the cards.
Periodic Table Card Reflection: Answer the following questions in your SN: • How did you know (predict) what should go into the missing spaces? (What information did you use to help you decide?) • Are there other ways you could have arranged your cards that would have still allowed you to predict the missing pieces? Explain.
Reflection: This is actually a very similar process to how scientists first organized and created the Periodic Table. Initially there were “gaps” in the table, since all elements had not yet been discovered. How do you think early scientists were able to predict what might go into those “gaps”? (HINT: What did you consider when predicting what to place into your “gaps” of cards?)
Periodic Table Organization • Atomic Number – left to right, top to bottom; number of protons • Groups – vertical (columns), similar properties • Periods – horizontal (rows), similar properties • Families – 3 major types: • Metals on the left • Non-metals on the right • Metalloids on the “staircase” between the two
