Equity Reform We need to focus on identifying and changing something significant and substantive
Past change efforts have preserved the hegemonic social and economic order rather than promoted social change
Changing the social order will require a change in discourse
Discourse I A process that appears to be change oriented, but in fact has not resulted in any substantial improvement of student learning
Discourse II focuses on: • demystifying or deconstructing the assumptions and values that drive the existing school culture. • uncomfortable, unequal, ineffective, prejudicial conditions and relationships in schools • learning for everyone in the school, not just the students
Discourse II results in: • outcomes that no longer correlate with social class, race or gender • organizational settings that continually change and develop because the members are continually learning.
In Discourse II cultures, ambiguity and change are part of a purposeful structure
How do we create Discourse II dialogue without creating anger, defensiveness, blame, guilt, and denial?
Discourse II Questions • What are we doing in this school that alienates any of our children so that they create problems and are disruptive? • How do we account for this disproportionate outcome?
Changing the Discourse • Select a topic from the Discourse I column • Write three Discourse I questions • Write three Discourse II questions
Staying the Course • Discuss what you will need to do to keep the conversation in Discourse II vs. Discourse I
Anticipate the Challenges • Share your questions • Discuss what will be difficult for you as the leader • Discuss the challenges for the group you lead
Reflection • Where are you/your group stuck in Discourse I in your setting? • What questions will you ask to change the discourse? • What do you need to lead Discourse II conversations?
