  5. The Unity of Truth • Progress in science is progress in our knowledge of God. • Example – evolution and theodicy. [Scientific knowledge is provisional] General Revelation

  6. Scripture – God’s Word • Knowledge of God progresses as our understanding of Scripture increases. Example: The Dead Sea Scrolls. • Scripture as progressive revelation. Examples: Ideas of life after death; attitudes to enemies; inclusion of Gentiles. Special Revelation

  7. Progress? • Should we progress beyond traditional beliefs about gender. • Progress = rethinking biblical teachings. OR • Rethinking biblical teachings = cultural conformity.

  8. Progress? • Should we progress beyond biblical statements about homosexuality? • Progress = rethinking biblical teachings. OR • Rethinking biblical teachings = cultural conformity.

  9. Some Key Issues • The unity of truth. • Revelation. The nature of Scripture. Culturally conditioned? Inspired? Authoritative? Seeds or final word? • Reason. Flawed? • Experience. Example: The Council of Jerusalem. • Culture. Advance or corruption? • What constitutes progress? Human flourishing?
