A hadith is composed of two parts: • The matn (text) • The isnad (chain of reporters) The Hadith
Marfu’- “elevated”: A narration from the Prophet. • Example: Al Bhukhari – Al Humaidi ‘Abdullah b. al Zubair – Sufyan – Yahya b. Sa’id al Ansari – Muhammad b. Ibrahim al Taymi – ‘Alqamah b. Waqqas al Laithi, who said: I heard ‘Umar b. al Khattab saying, while on the pulpit, “I hear Allah’s Messenger (P.B.U.H) saying: The reward….” • Mauquf- “stopped”: A narration from a Companion only. • Example: Al Bukhari reports in his Sahih, in Kitab al Fara’id, that Abu Bakr, Ibn ‘Abbas and Ibn al Zubair said, “The grandfather is (treated like) a father.” • Maqtu’- “severed”: A narration from a Successor. • Muslim reports in the Introduction to his Sahih that IbnSirin (d. 110) said, “This knowledge is the Religion, so be careful from whom you take your religion.” According to the Reference of a Particular Authority
Musnad- The hadith was reported from shaikhs all the way up to the Prophet. • Mursal- If the link between the Successor and the Prophet is missing. • Munqati- If a link anywhere before the Successor is missing. • Mu’dal- If the number of consecutive missing reporters in the isnad exceeds one. • Mu’allaq- If the reporter omits the whole isnad. • Muttasil- If the link has a continuous chain. • Tadlis- If a reporter conceals the identity of his shaikh. Mutawatir- One group reports from another group of people. • Ahad- When the narration does not reach the same number of people as mutawatir • Gharib- 1 person • Aziz– 2 people • Mashur- 3 people or more According to the Number of Reporters
Sahih- Has a continuous isnad, the reporters are trustworthy with good memory, everyone is reporting from shaikh from Prophet, and has no defects in the hadith • those which are transmitted by both al-Bukhari and Muslim; • those which are transmitted by al-Bukhari only; • those which are transmitted by Muslim only; those which are not found in the above two collections, but • which agree with the requirements of both al-Bukhari and Muslim; • which agree with the requirements of al-Bukhari only; • which agree with the requirements of Muslim only; and • those declared Sahih by other traditionists. • Hasan- Good; Between sahih and da’if. • Da’if- The chain of narrators is broken, narrator isn’t good with strong memory. • Maudu’- Fabricated • political differences; • Factions based on issues of creed; • fabrications by zanadiqah (enemies-within spreading heretical beliefs); • fabrications by story-tellers; • fabrications by ignorant ascetics; • prejudice in favour of town, race or a particular imam; • inventions for personal motives; • proverbs turned into ahadith.
