  2. My Background • Graduated summa cum laude with a bachelor of science degree in early childhood education from Georgia College and State University • 2 years of teaching first grade in Putnam County Schools • This is my first year of teaching at Big Creek.

  4. A Day in the Life of Your First Grader • MorningAnnouncements • Phonics • Reading • IE squared Time • Specials • Writing • Math • Social Studies and Science

Language Arts • Saxon Phonics-this program enables students to become successful readers and spellers, by building a solid foundation in phonics • Spelling-Students will be tested over letters and sounds previously taught and sight words. Tests will be on Fridays. Graded work will go home in Wednesday folders. • Grammar-nouns, verbs, adjectives, pronouns, proper nouns, capitalization, punctuation, and contractions • Independent Centers • Guided Reading • RAZ Kidz

  6. Writing Workshop • Journal Writing • Creative Writing • Independent Writing • Inventive Spelling • Writing Sentences- C.U.P. S. (Capital letters, Understand what you write, Punctuation, Spaces) • Our focus in writing is: • Proper letter formation • Spacing • Capitalization/Punctuation • Sentence Structure

Math • Math Frameworks • Created by the Georgia Department of Education with the help of a teacher on special assignment from Forsyth County • Based on the Georgia Performance Standards • VERY hands on approach to learning • Higher level of thinking and questioning • Higher Depth of Knowledge http://dese.mo.gov/divimprove/sia/msip/DOK_Chart.pdf • Guided Math Centers – Provides small group work and lessons on your child’s level for each math skill.

  10. Health • Fire and Tornado Safety/Reporting Emergencies • Drugs and Poisons • Nutrition/Dental Health/Personal Hygiene • Bicycle, Traffic, and Passenger Safety • Coach Duncan will include these subjects in PE also.

Assessments • Standards Based Grading and Reporting • Academics graded on 3, 2, 1 scale. • Behavior graded on S, P, N scale. • Homework – Phonics, Reading Log, IXL, Raz-Kids, Projects • Conferences – • Fall- Oct. 19th, 20th, and 21st (I will meet with all parents) • Spring • Please sign up for the fall conference before you leave tonight!

  12. Behavior Choices • Great GreenOnly one or two students a day will be on great green. They get a treat. • Yippy YellowAll students start here everyday.  • Okay OrangeStudent has broken one rule and walks 3 laps on the playground at recess. • Watch-out WhiteStudent has broken two rules and walks 5 laps on the playground at recess. • Boo Hoo BlueStudent has broken three rules and walks 10 laps on the playground at recess. • Red Hot RedStudent has broken four rules after several warnings and walks laps the whole recess time.
