  3. Objective • To present research strategies and health resources appropriate for the discipline of Chicana/o & Latina/o studies.

  4. Research Process • Create a problem research statement • Define the question • Ask why???? Alcoholism among Mexican American males is a major health issue in the Latino community.

  7. Boolean Operators • AND narrows a search • both variables must appear in same citation • terms are different in meaning • example: “Diabetes AND Hispanics” • OR broadens a search • terms are similar in meaning • either term may appear in the record • example: “Latinos OR Hispanics”

  8. Truncation • Allows for searching root word with variant endings • Example: • Alcohol* • Alcoholic • Alcoholics • Alcoholism • * = Most common computer command • ? (Chicano Database)

  9. Research Process Create a research strategy using Boolean Logic. • Use Boolean connectors “and” “or” “not” to connect abstract concepts. Alcohol* ANDMexican American* AND male* (Latino* OR Hispanic*) AND male* AND Alcohol*
