  2. Cataractisoneofthemostcommoneye problemsprimarilyassociatedwithold-age. Cataractsareavisualimpairmentinwhich thelensoftheeyebecomescloudy, resulting inblurryvision. Thecloudycataractouslensis removedviathesurgicalprocedureand replacedwithanartificialintraocularlensto restoreclearvision. Phaco-EmulsificationSurgeryisamodern surgicaltechniquefirstintroducedbyKelman in1967. Thistechniquehasprovedtobegreat withrespecttothemanagementofcataracts andvisualrehabilitation. Cataractsurgery, overyears, hasundergoneanoceanof changesinitstechniquesandresults. Phaco- Emulsificationtechniquehasmadeamarkin thenewerawithsmallerincisionsand foldablelensesbeingimplantedthrough them. InPhaco-Emulsificationcataractsurgery, the cataractisbrokenintosmallpiecesand removedfromtheeyeusingultrasound. A specialphacoequipmentisusedforthis purpose.

Thisinturnreducestheamount ofglassesrequiredfordistantvision. Only inveryrarecases, asinglestitchisneeded tosealthewoundvis-a-vistheolder surgicalmethodwhichwouldhavemore suturesduetothedeepincisionmade duringthesurgery.

Nohospitalization – Thesurgeryhardly needsafewminutesandisaday process. Walk-in, Walkoutsurgery. Thiscataractsurgerydoesn’trequire anybandagesandneedsminimal precautions. Post-surgicalcareisnotverystrictor sensitive. Norestrictiononnormal activities. Canjoinworkfromnext morning. Patientshavebeenobservedtohave fastrecoverywithgoodvisionina matteroffewdays. Finalspectaclesatoneortwoweeks. Surgeryisconsideredtobealowrisk oneandthepossibilityofaninfectionis extremelylowduetothesmallwound whichisself-sealing.

Earlyvisualrehabilitationisthemost importantadvantageofphaco- emulsificationtechniqueandtheresults obtainedpost-surgeryisveryeffective.
