  3. Letter from the editor Dear reader, This autobiographical magazine is titled fifth person point of view because I’m the fifth one in my family. My family has helped realize who I am and what I believe in. It would be wrong to leave them out of my magazine. This magazine is my opinions and stories that I have with the help of my family. One of my favorite quotes is from Charles Darwin “Blushing is the most peculiar and must human of all expressions.” I like this quote because it’s exactly what makes homo sapiens special. I wrote about humiliation in a feature story that I named after him “Darwin Awards (for Middle School). My next article “Decisions, Decisions” is about how a teenager makes their decisions. It has to do with adults keeping their opinions to themselves. “Long Distance Grandma” is about a special person in my life, my grandma. It has been hard since we moved never being able to see her. Although, I did see her recently and I have to say she hasn’t changed. She’s still the perfect grandma. Tiger’s Quest is a book that I strongly suggest for everyone. Though, start with the first book in the series Tiger’s Curse. These books are a part of an amazing series nobody could put sown. Hallow Een is one of my favorite pieces of free writing. I enjoyed writing it so much and letting my imagination flow. It’s amazing to see something down in the depths of your mind suddenly be put on paper and shared with people. I love this article. I hope this is a magazine that everyone can enjoy because I certainly enjoyed putting it together. Dana Rettig

  5. Darwin Awards (for middle school) “Do you mind if I tell the rest of the staff?” asked the nurse through her laughter. “Sure,” I replied shakily on the verge of tears. I was humiliated. It was bad enough my entire class knew, but know the entire office staff would know. I looked down at my tennis shoe hanging from my pant strings, and had to blink fast to keep off the tears. I had gotten bored during story time in kindergarten, and I tied my shoe string to my pant string in an intricate knot. I couldn’t get it out so I was sent to the nurse to see if she could get it out. She couldn’t. Well, maybe she could if she wasn’t laughing so hard. When she finally got it untied and my shoe was released my face was so flushed I looked like a tomato. This day has haunted me ever since. We’ve all had these moments, though, when our face burns with humiliation and our cheeks become red. I know firsthand how hard it can be to let go of a moment like that. To make it stop haunting us. What always helps me is to read somebody else’s more embarrassing stories and feel better about myself. So here are some really embarrassing stories. Enjoy them then feel better. One time someone I know stood, in public, and just cried. Not the sweet-silent-tears-slowly-falling-down it was the face-scrunched-up-snot that was more embarrassing for me since she was completely oblivious. Somebody else, in the middle of recess, pretended to have a baby

  6. I laughed so hard. The same girl kicked a guy, in a very painful spot, and he had to get ointment. This particular moment is not only embarrassing for the girl but also the boy. She also sprayed her mom in the face with air freshener. Her mom had to go to the hospital. Their doctor must have enjoyed that conversation about why her eyes were damaged. Another girl tried to kiss a boy, when they were really young, and bit straight through his lip. He had to get stitches. Another victim ran around her mother’s store without any clothes on at all. While doing this she met her future fourth grade teacher. My heart goes out to anybody who has a more embarrassing moment than these. I feel better already. Another way to get over an embarrassing moment is to talk to somebody don’t sit and suffer talk to a trusted person. I feel better already. Another way to get over an embarrassing moment is to talk to somebody don’t sit and suffer talk to a trusted person. Although, try to steer clear of Middle School girls they will spread whatever story they are told. Not to say that some Middle School girls aren’t trustworthy, but as an overall species Middle School girls are talkative. Anyway, talk through whatever happened it may not even seem like a bid deal anymore. Don’t sit around and suffer, like I usually do, everyone can go talk to somebody and it will feel like a weights been lifted off your shoulders. I realize there are people who never get embarrassed and this article has been totally useless. Well to those people I say ‘Good for you!’. It must take amazing self confidence to never get embarrassed. To those who do feel awful about their past. Do something about it!

  7. Decisions, Decisions What motivates us to make our decisions? What is our thinking process to decide what to do? As a kid in 7th grade my decisions are based off of adults. Even though we make small decisions such as what to wear or eat the vast majority of our decisions are inspired by adults such as parents, teachers, actors, singers, celebrities, etc. For example we know about nothing about politics but we had an opinion about it from our parents. Also kids look similar to the parent in weight, make up, and some fashion. All the things we do or even the things we can change about our appearance we can make for ourselves but the adults make them for us we need to change that. Even if most of our decisions come from adults some of them are our own. For example I am a vegetarian but my parents are not. Neither is anyone I know besides my aunt who lives in Oregon. Also some kids decide what they will look like gothic, formal, or even perpetual pink. A lot of times though the way we dress depend on home life. If parents are constantly arguing and yelling at their child their child is more likely to be gothic or some other fashion that expresses that they are unhappy or upset. So once again adults take over our decisions. Kids will eat or dress like their parents. For example if the parents of a child are unhealthy and don’t eat right or get enough exercise and are fat. Their child is more likely to not eat right, get enough exercise, be unhealthy, and fat. It’s not our decision we didn’t know better than to do what our parents did; we don’t know it’s wrong. Sometimes we still don’t know what our parents are doing is wrong. It is important for a kid to realize early on that their parents aren’t always right so that they don’t make all the same mistakes they did. In this area politics is a big part of it. Though, this is mainly our fault. For my parents at least they want me to review the information and make my own decision if I were to need a political standing right now. Since it’s easier to listen to our parents political standing and adopt their views that what we do. If we want a political standing right now then we should make it the hard way. We should do research and figure out which party we want to be part of and which candidate we want to win. Parents need to tell us that we need to make our own decisions. We cannot lean on them forever. In conclusion we should try to make our own decisions. Start small like change the way we eat, eat healthier than our parents or take independence on something else. Then later in life we can make decisions for ourselves. If we just adopt our parent’s views nothing will ever change. We can make the decisions to change the world we are the future generation after all.

  8. Long Distance Grandma When I was young and I lived in California me and my grandma used to live only an hour away versus today living 3000 miles away. Back then every other Friday before I had started school she would watch me and stay the night. Over that time we bonded a lot and I found some things very unique to her personality. My grandma has that look of a grandma sweet and kind and someone you could always count on. She has little laughing wrinkles around her eyes that show that she smiles a lot. Her dark silver hair falls into a short bob that frames her face. She always wears a beautiful Jesus necklace that was gorgeously painted. The way she looks is a lot like her personality. My grandma Caro is the most positive person I know. Even if everything is going wrong she will put a positive spin on things. She also goes to church almost every day and is extremely into helping people. She especially helps one lady from Africa named Odet. Odet doesn’t speak English, and Grandma goes with her places and helps her with her every day language. Another thing she does for her faith is that she sings in a group called the Sing Along Gals. They sing for the people in assisted living, or nursing homes. A few things I remember from our days together were that she made the best rice and chicken. Her recipes were Puerto Rican and tasted absolutely scrumptiously delicious. Another thing she was really good at was playing the piano and because of her I will always love the song “If I Were a Rich Man”. Although she has many talents she does have some things she isn’t good at. For example she can’t keep alive a plant ever. Grandma is all so never on time, I guess it runs in the family. Another thing I do like her is that we both take a long time to get ready no matter where were going. Another thing she does is she is always giving people rides even if she doesn’t know them that well. This isn’t exactly a bad thing but it is a little bit unusual. My grandma isn’t perfect, nobody is, but she is my grandma as she will be forever. My grandma is a very unique and super uber nice. I love her very much even if she is a bit odd and quirky. I hope to see her again very soon.

  9. Tiger’s Quest By: Colleen Houck Kelsey- An average girl who is destined to save Prince Dhiren and Kishan, but she lets her heart get in the way. Prince Dhiren (Ren)- The prince of India 300 years ago. When his brother fell in love with his bride-to-be he was captured and imprisoned in a tiger’s body where he has been stuck for 300 years. Prince Kishan- The brother of Ren who fell deeply in love with his brothers wife and he paid the price for that by also being trapped inside of a tiger’s body. Genre: Fantasy The setting is in a beautiful house in India. Also the jungles of India are a frequent setting for this book. After Kelsey left Ren broken-hearted in India she can’t help thinking of him all the time. When he comes to visit at Christmas time they quickly realize how in love they are, but as soon as everything was nice and peaceful Lokesh captured Ren. Lokesh wants Kelsey and more importantly the amulet. With love in their hearts they can endure anything, but what will be the effects of all that time apart? The theme of this book is love can endure anything. That’s the theme because even though Kelsey was torn away from Ren she still loved him, and even though Ren was tortured to give up Kelsey’s location he wouldn’t and he still loved her. My classmates would like it because it’s really well written and it appeals to both boys and girls. “Ren replied, “The shirt is tight so it dosen’t inhibit movement.” My snort turned into a giggle. Then, spurred on by Kishan, the giggle changed to loud peals of laughter. The kind of reader who would like this book is someone who likes a good romance novel but also likes adventure. Although, there is an epic love triangle going on they’re still trying to find Ren with all the dangers that entails.

  10. Hallow Een The Eens weren’t very special, in fact, they went out of their way to not be special. They strived to be the most normal they could be. There once was a time where they didn’t care, but that was before it came. A peaceful time when they could be who they were, but now they had a colossal secret to hide. All they wanted to be is normal. This is the story of how the Eens lives changed forever. Mrs. Een had a beautiful three-year-old named Mike. He was perfect. At least in her mind he was. He looked like his father except for his deep blue eyes that he got from his grandfather. She couldn’t wait to have another perfect child. She was thinking all this on the way to the hospital with her next baby on the way. Though, she could tell something was definitely off, call it mothers intuition, but this child was not going to be like Mike. This scared her a little but she choose to ignore it as it was probably just the pregnancy hormones. She didn’t think what happened could have ever possibly happen. After little Pete or Alex was born and Mrs. Een had got some sleep her family came to visit. All the relatives passed the baby around and remarked how he looked just like his parents. Finally he was placed in Damien's hands. Now, Damien is important to this story. He was Mrs. Eens brother. He was veryugly. His family refused to ever be seen with him in public even when he was a child. Damien detested the way his family treated him, but he made his peace with it. He still held on to the ridiculous hope, though, that one day they would accept him and love him for who he was. When the little boy was placed back into Mrs. Eens hands something happened. The child started to shake and emitted a low rumbling noise. Mrs. Een placed the baby back into the crib afraid that he was having a seizure. This was no seizure. The baby started to grow. Soon it’s chubby infant legs hung over the side of the crib. Though, he grew on. In an instant he had lengthened into a child of five or six. He grew for hours. The whole family gaped simply amazed. Finally two hours later he stopped growing the size of a tall fifteen-year-old. By this time Mrs. Een had sent the rest of the family away and it was just her and her newborn fifteen-year-old. When he stopped growing she peered into the crib and screamed. She had the ugliest son ever. He had paper thin skin that was so pale it looked almost translucent. He had the thinnest palest lips imaginable and oily skin full of bright red pimples. His thin stringy hair was slicked back with oil and a little mustache was starting to form above his upper lip. The strange boy was so thin it looked that if you poked him he would fall over. Though the weirdest thing about him was all the hair. Not a single part of his body was not covered in hair. He looked like a dog but smellier. Mrs. Een almost passed out.

  11. The next week the Eens came home from the hospital and locked the boy in the basement. They found a fitting name for the boy, Hallow. He was Hallow Een. When Damien was sent home after Hallow was born he started to fear for the boy, and rightfully so. When a month passed with no word from his sister and her child he decided to pay a visit. The Eens didn’t appreciate Damien stopping by especially when the neighbors could see him. Though, they let him in hoping the could pass off Hallow to him. Damien soon found out how they were treating Hallow and instantly flared up in anger. He had to live his life in the shadows Hallow would not have to do the same thing. He tried to convince them that the community would accept Hallow. They didn’t believe him, so they struck up a deal. If he could take Hallow around to the neighbors and get them to give him treats they would consider letting him out. This little test would prove that Hallow could be accepted by the people. Damien took him out. At the first house he took a deep breathe and looked at Hallow for reassurance. He knocked. The neighbor woman opened the door and… she laughed. She assumed two such ugly fowl people could not exist. She assumed they were in costume. They went with it and gave them the treats they pleaded for. Damien and Hallow found that this worked for every house. The Eens however were not convinced that they were accepted. The next year, on the same day, Damien tried this stunt again to try and convince them. To their extreme surprise other kids put on a costume and begged for treats with Damien and Hallow. They felt accepted among other ugly faces. So every year Damien and Hallow go out and beg for treats. It became such a tradition that it finally became an official holiday. They even named it after Hallow they named it Halloween. The biggest question, though, is were Damien and Hallow ever really accepted. Even when they helped Hallow gain his freedom they were mocking him with their masks. What would you do?
