  1. National Biology Protein and Enzymes d: What are synthesis reactions?

  2. Recap • Classroom reporter from last lesson select name/number to recap what was learned last lesson

  3. What are we learning today? We are learning to: • Describe what is meant by a synthesis reaction • Recognise a synthesis reaction in diagrammatic form • State the name of an enzyme involved in a synthesis reaction Success criteria: • Synthesis – small molecules joined to make larger molecule • Phosphorylase enzyme synthesises starch from glucose – 1 phosphate

  4. What are synthesis reactions? • In some reactions, enzymes are used to build large molecules out of small molecules. • When enzymes are used to build things up it is called SYNTHESIS

  5. glucose An example of a synthesis reaction • In the SYNTHESIS reaction below the enzyme phosphorylase builds up starch from glucose molecules. phosphorylase starch

  6. Experiment You are going to use the enzyme phosphorylase to produce starch from glucose -1-phosphate • Collect a dimple tile, three dropping pipettes and one of each of the vials containing phosphorylase, glucose-1-phosphate and water • Label dimple tile as follows 0 4 8 12 Row 1 Glucose-1-phosphate and phosphorylase Row 2 Glucose-1-phosphate and water Row 3 Phosphorylase and water

  7. Conclusions • In row 1 starch was synthesised from glucose-1-phosphate in the presence of the enzyme phosphorylase • In row 2 there was no reaction – starch was not produced because the enzyme phosphorylase was absent • In row 3 there was no reaction – starch was not produced because the substrate glucose-1-phosphate was absent

  8. Summary • Stand and deliver • All group members have to be able to state the substrate, enzyme and product of the synthesis reaction before they can sit down
