Student centered • Learner created materials • Not simply presentational • Collaborative • Social • It is not a change of technology, but a change in the way we use technology.
Voice Tools: • Why Do we need them? • Think about something that you like to do that took you time to learn to do well.
How many minutes do you think the average student spends actually producing orally with the language in a a typical 50 minute class? • About 1 minute • About 4 minutes • About 8 minutes • About 15 minutes • About 25 minutes • About 35 minutes
Voice Tools • Vocaroo: • Simple non/login recording of audio. • Web based • Saved for three months • Quick and easy • Needs no player (Quicktime, WMP, etc..) • www.vocaroo.com
Speakamessage • Not limited to Outlook. Can work with Gmail, Yahoo, etc. • Can do both voice and images • Can view as single image or as a slide show • Use for testing, getting reviews, sending images of texts, packages, etc.. • http://www.speak-a-message.com/en/index.html
Audacity • More robust • Saves as MP3 • Easy editing and high quality. • Most used audio editing software in the world. • http://audacity.sourceforge.net/ • http://audacity.sourceforge.net/manual-1.2/tutorials.html • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lrPGMjZORCM
WINK • Demo creation tool like captivate or camtasia • Simpler than both • Use print screens with graphics with voice. • Have students create grammar video demos with voice. • Have students capture their experiences in Google Earth and share. • http://codex.gallery2.org/Codex:How_to_Create_a_Wink_Tutorial
Snap 6.0 • Screen capture: FREE http://www.freedownloadscenter.com/Multimedia_and_Graphics/Screen_Capture_Tools/HyperSnap_Download.html
Let’s see…. • Maneuvering • Views • Photos • Wikipedia • 3d views • Video tours
Some ideas: • Food • Health • Housing • Travel • Transportation • Geography • Art • Telling time • Architecture • Holidays • Sports • Shopping
Semester Projects • Every chapter, they add to the locations and what they visit • Once they have all locations and pieces they can make a tour • Place tour file on line for peer review • Present the tour in class for 3-5 minutes in groups • Use Hypersnap to create a slide show if tour is too tech heavy.
In Groups • Find a location of interest • You are looking for a place to live during your study abroad experience. You have three days. Include the following: • Activities for fun (seeing a movie, visiting a landmark, where you will eat, etc..) • Path for walking from one location to another for one of the days • Why did you pick that location? • Find housing for you and some roommates.
Use in Study Abroad Experience • Students can track visits and make it come alive for future Study Abroad Students • Use tours as a way to create interest in future travel at your campus • Use tours for oral exams
