  2. Blue helmets • In 1956, Lester b. Pearson proposed sending un troops to act as a peacekeeping force in Egypt during the Suez crisis. • Un peacekeepers come from multiple countries. • For peacekeepers to intervene they must: not use force, must remain neutral and must be impartial.

  8. Yugoslavia Marshall tito ruled Yugoslavia as a communist dictator from 1953 to 1980. Yugoslavia was ethnically diverse: Slovenes, Croats, Serbs, Albanians, Muslim Bosnians, Montenegrins and Macedonians lived in the territory.

  9. Ethnic conflicts After tito’s death in 1980, republics in the territory began to push for independence. Conflicts arose because of long-standing ethnic tensions and non-recognition of a territory’s independence.
