  1. Introduction to SafeAssignfor Students Instructor Name Instructors may use this file to present to students, print out as a handout and/or copy and paste content into a course syllabus so that students are aware that SafeAssign is being used and why it is being used in your course. Customize this file to suit your needs. Use Slide 4 – SafeAssignment Reports onlyif you are setting up your SafeAssignments in Draft mode, and allowing students to access to their SafeAssignreports.

  2. What is SafeAssign? • We will be using software called SafeAssign for this class. • SafeAssignis a service that detects similarities between papers that you submit as assignments in this course, and papers in the SafeAssign database. • A submission is compared to: • Index of internet documents • Proquest Database • A local (UMB) database of previously submitted papers • A Global Reference Database of all papers submitted to the SafeAssign service (This is an opt‐in only feature) Educational Technologies and Learning Commons

  3. Why are we using SafeAssign? • The intention of this tool is to protect original work. • It will help you learn to cite sources properly. • SafeAssign is an intellectual property checker. Much like a spell checker checks for spelling errors, this tool checks for original phrasing and ideas. • SafeAssign Resources: • Video Demohttp://bbstudents.wikispaces.umb.edu/SafeAssign • SafeAssign sitehttp://wiki.safeassign.com Educational Technologies and Learning Commons

  4. SafeAssignment Reports Each time you submit an assignment you will have the ability to view a SafeAssignOriginality Report. The report will show you how much of your document matches other online sources. You will have the opportunity to view these reports and re-submit your assignments for the assignment when the SafeAssignment is set up in Draft mode. Each time a new document is submitted the previous document and SafeAssign report is overwritten. Once the due date has passed I will set up a new SafeAssignment in Final mode. 5. Student Privacy • Instructors may request the following from students: • Papers are submitted in a supported electronic format. • Students submit papers to Blackboard via the SafeAssign tool for designated assignments. • IMPORTANT NOTE: Instructors may submit student papers to the UMass Boston database at any time directly with the SafeAssign Direct Submit tool provided that all student personal information is removed including, student name, id number, etc. Educational Technologies and Learning Commons
