  1. Ready, Set, Go!! May 2008-St. Tammany Parish Special Education Committee for Literacy for Significant Cognitive Disabilities is Formed Supervisor of Special Education Coordinator of Visually Impaired Program Coordinator of Moderate-Severe Program Coordinator of Autism Coordinator of Hearing Impaired/Assistive Technology 3 Assistive Technology Liaison’s Committee meetings occur at least 1 time a month

  2. Goals Continue assisting and training teachers to further expand a balanced curriculum. Facilitate literacy as a means of life long learning.

  3. Plan of Action Include Literacy Training in the new teacher induction class at the parish level 2. Provide professional development training on new research based Literacy practices consisting of Super Saturdays (3 hour block training) Banking hours (6 continuing education hours) Training Workshops Presentations to special education administration Adapted Literacy Book Fair Show and Tell 3. Secure a nationally recognized leader in the field of literacy to conduct parish wide training (Dr. Caroline Musselwhite)

Action Steps cont’d Select assessment tool to be piloted and require a literacy objective on each child's IEP based on result of the assessment Establish a list of resources to support literacy at all levels Schedule “make and take” workshops to provide teachers with at least 1 complete module to start with (RNC, Severe/Profound, Moderate classes) approx. 53 teachers Implement alternate pencils in pilot classrooms

  5. Modules Included Adapted Books Related Math Activities Related Science Activities Sequencing Activities Vocabulary Photos Adapted Recipes Computer Activities CD to Reproduce

  7. Teacher Growth Track View Dr. Musselwhite videos and answer questions Literacy assessment on each student Attend workshop Video tape teachers engaged in literacy instruction with students
