Solubility Lesson 6 Separating Ions
Separating Ions by Precipitation Two positive ions are mixed in solution Ag+ Ca2+
Separating Ions by Precipitation Ag+ Ca2+ Add a negative ion that has low solubility with only one of the positive ions.
Separating Ions by Precipitation Ag+ Ca2+ Add a negative ion that has low solubility with only one of the positive ions. Try adding one anion from the Cl-, Br-, and I- group and work down if necessary.
Separating Ions by Precipitation Ag+ Ca2+ Cl-lowhigh Add a negative ion that has low solubility with only one of the positive ions. Try adding one anion from the Cl-, Br-, and I- group and work down if necessary.
Separating Ions by Precipitation Ag+ Ca2+ Cl-lowhigh Add a negative ion that has low solubility with only one of the positive ions. Try adding one anion from the Cl-, Br-, and I- group and work down if necessary. Add NaCl and filter out the solid AgCl(s)in order to remove it.
Separating Ions by Precipitation Ca2+ Cl-lowhigh Add a negative ion that has low solubility with only one of the positive ions. Try adding one anion from the Cl-, Br-, and I- group and work down if necessary. Add NaCl and filter out the solid AgCl(s)in order to remove it. Ag+ + Cl- AgCl(s)
Separating Ions by Precipitation Ca2+ Cl-lowhigh Toremove the remaining Ca2+ ion add an anion from the next group down on the solubility chart SO42-.
Separating Ions by Precipitation Ca2+ Cl-lowhigh SO42-low Toremove the remaining Ca2+ ion add an anion from the next group down on the solubility chart SO42-. Add Na2SO4andfilter out the solid CaSO4(s)in order to remove it.
Separating Ions by Precipitation Cl-lowhigh SO42-low Toremove the remaining Ca2+ ion add an anion from the next group down on the solubility chart SO42-. Add Na2SO4andfilter out the solid CaSO4(s)in order to remove it. Ca2+ + SO42- CaSO4(s)
Separating Positive Ions 1. Separate Ba2+ & Pb2+ Start at the top of page 4 and try Cl- first. i. Add NaCl Filter out PbCl2(s) Pb2+ + 2Cl- PbCl2(s) Drop down to SO42- ii. Add Na2SO4 Filter out BaSO4(s) Ba2+ + SO42- BaSO4(s)
Separating Positive Ions 2. Separate Cu2+, Mg2+ & Sr2+ Start at the top of page 4 and try Cl- first- all are High. Drop down to SO42- i. Add Na2SO4 Filter out SrSO4(s) Sr2+ + SO42- SrSO4(s) Drop down to S2- ii. Add Na2S Filter out CuS(s) Cu2+ + S2- CuS(s) Drop down to OH- ii. Add NaOH Filter out Mg(OH)2(s) Mg2+ + 2OH- Mg(OH)2(s)
Separating Negative Ions Remove the lowest negative ion on the chart first by adding a positive atom. 1. Separate Cl- & OH- Look for a cation that is low with OH- (lowest) and high with Cl-. i. Ba2+ works so add Ba(NO3)2 and filteroutBa(OH)2(s) Ba2+ + 2OH- Ba(OH)2(s) ii.Add Ag+ as AgNO3 and filter out AgCl(s) Ag+ + Cl- AgCl(s)
Separating Negative Ions 2. Separate Cl- S2- CO32- Look for a cation that is low with CO32- and high with Cl- and S2- i. Ba2+ works so add Ba(NO3)2 and filteroutBaCO3(s) Ba2+ + CO32- BaCO3(s) Look for a cation that is low with S2-and high with Cl- ii.Add Zn2+ as Zn(NO3)2 and filter out ZnS(s) Zn2+ + S2- ZnS(s) iii. Add Ag+ as AgNO3 and filter out AgCl(s) Ag+ + Cl- AgCl(s)
