  2. What does ‘Food Security’ mean? The World Food Summit of 1996 defined food security as existing “when all people at all times have access to sufficient, safe, nutritious food to maintain a healthy and active life.”

  3. How do we measure Food Security? THREE PILLARS OF FOOD SECURITY: • FOOD AVAILABILITY • sufficient and consistent quantities of food • FOOD ACCESS • sufficient resources to obtain appropriate foods for a nutritious diet • FOOD USE • education of basic nutrition and care, as well as adequate water and sanitation

  4. Food Security VS Food Aid Food Security Food Aid Food Banks Giving hungry people something to eat immediately Short term solution to a long term problem • Changing the root causes of hunger • Allowing for consistency in food consumption and production • Education

PWRDF & TANZANIA Seeds for the Future 55 farmers will raise crops and provide 20% of their crops to the program that will provide seeds to others to start a farming movement within the community. Not only will the pass along of seeds see a large number of farmers reaping the rewards but will also feed into the program. Those new farmers will provide 20% to keep the cycle going. By the end of a five year cycle over 90 000 farmers will have benefited!

  9. PWRDF is preparing to launch a three year Food Security Campaign focused on education and fundraising. The official launch will take place in November 2013 at the Forum meetings. We are looking forward to animating and engaging our networks and beyond in this exciting project in the coming months. Stay tuned!!

  10. What is happening now… • The entire Food Campaign Committee met on April 4 to look at three marketing proposals • The Food Campaign Committee authorized staff to engage in a conversation with Public Inc around setting budget for the Campaign • The Board will make a decision in early May.
