  2. The main character is June (Ming-Na Wen) Her mother, Suyuan (Kieu Chinh), recently died. Suyuan abandoned her two twin daughters in China, but June later found out they were alive. Suyuan and June (Jing-Mei)

  3. Lindo (Tsai Chin), the mother of Waverly, was forced into a marriage at age 15 while living in China. Tricked her way out of her marriage. Waverly (Tamlyn Tomita), the daughter of Lindo, is the child who played chess and who falls in love with Rich. Lindo and Waverly

  4. Lena (Lauren Tom), the daughter of Ying-ying, is married to Harold, the man who treats her like a child. Ying-ying (France Nuyen), Lena’s mother, fell in love with Lin Xiao. Lin Xiao cheated on her and she drowned their son. Ying-Ying and Lena

  5. Rose (Rosalind Chao), the daughter of An-Mei, is the daughter who almost goes through a divorce with Ted. Rose also struggles with her role as a wife. An-Mei (Lisa Lu), Rose’s mother, leaves to live with her mother when she was the concubine in a household. An-Mei’s mother had her son stolen from her husband’s other wife, and later dies due to an overdose on opium. An-Mei and Rose
