NDC Parris Island CAPT George R. Hull 29 August 2002
Approach Take advantage of full manning of dental technicians Raise Dental Health Index Increase efficiency and production while maintaining quality of care
Deployment • Utilize all available operatories for patient care • Assign a technician or hygienist to each operatory • Train department technicians in expanded function • Practice multi-chair periodontics and hygiene
Operatory Utilization - Convert DOR’s used for Storage or Administration back to treatment rooms • We were using one operatory in the periodontics department as a supply room. • We eliminated supply stockpiles and purchased new chair, unit, and cabinets • Repair returned the DOR to full function in October 2001
Operatory Utilization - Acquire one technician or hygienist for each operatory • The Periodontics Department was not fully utilizing two operatories due to lack of manpower. • Over a period of 9 months the department acquired three additional technicians - one for each vacant operatory.
Train technicians in expanded function • The department acquired an LPO who had received 2 weeks of formal training at the NDC, NORVA, Prophy Technician Course • We assigned the LPO to train the new technicians in hygiene and preventive dentistry procedures • The new technicians also received sealant certification in the Comp Department
Practice multi-chair periodontics • Delegate appropriate tasks to expanded function technicians • Assign one or more hygienists and/or doctors to work 2 or 3 operatories each
Delegated tasks • Department doctors: • delegate tasks of hygiene instruction, tobacco and nutrition counseling, supra-gingival scaling, and polishing to expanded function technicians. • Provide anesthesia for technicians and hygienists when indicated
Doctor/hygienist tasks • Designated doctors and hygienists work multiple operatories, performing the sub-gingival scaling and root planing on those patients assigned to the expanded function techs.
Multi-chair periodontics - additional benefits • Expanded function techs can also perform post-op treatment, take impressions, and place sealants (under supervision) while doctor stays productive in another operatory
Additional benefits • Periodontist can go directly from a surgery to another patient without waiting for operatory turnover • High morale - techs enjoy the additional responsibility and chance to work more independently
