Definition and Purpose • Defined, propaganda is the systematic spreading of ideas influencing people to support a particular case or point of view. • In WW1, the government used a massive poster campaign to encourage support for the war effort; • Television had not been invented and not everyone owned a radio, so posters were the most effective way to get a message across; • Posters were put up wherever people could see them.

Topics of posters included: • Encouraging men to enlist • Pressuring women to encourage their husbands, boyfriends and brothers to enlist; • Encourage women to help out at home; • Encourage children to help the war effort; • Being in favour of or against conscription; • Lobbying the right of women to vote; • Encouraging pacificism; • The important role of Canadian heroes, such a Billy Bishop; • Encouraging people to conserve food, money, energy.

  4. Techniques for Poster Design • Mass Appeal: immediate mass appeal regardless of race, culture, wealth, ancestry, position or religion • Transfer: using the names or pictures of famous people (but not direct quotations); • Idealistic: should be idealistic, not realistic • Bandwagon: persuading people to do something by letting them know others are doing it. • Repetition: the product name is repeated at least four times. • Emotional words: words that will make you feel strongly about someone or something. • Testimonial: using the words of a famous person to persuade you. • Must implant a sense of righteousness into the viewer • Minimize the concept of time
