  5. Let’s Talk About • Turn to page 46-47 • What obstacles might the Eskimo family face? • What obstacles might a blind person face? What qualities might a person with disabilities have to possess to overcome obstacles?

  6. Let’s Talk About • What obstacles might a mountain climber face? How might the climber feel after making it to the top of the mountain? • How do people overcome obstacles?

  8. Listen: • The story “Sense” is about a famous composer. Listen for the words: • Confront • Predicament • Ingenious • triumphant

  9. Amazing Words • Confront- to meet someone face to face • He had to confront the boy on the way home from school. • Predicament- a difficult, unpleasant or embarrassing situation • Beethoven had a terrible predicament. • Teach your partner this word.

  10. Amazing Words • ingenious- clever at making or doing things • The ingenious boys made a ladder for their tree house. • triumphant- victorious or successful • The soccer team was triumphant in their pursuit of the trophy. • Teach this word to your partner.

  11. Generalize To generalize is to make a broad statement or inference that applies to many examples. • You could say most schools hold dances. • Which word is a clue that this is a generalization?

Predict and Set Purpose • Today we are going to read about a boy who is going to a school dance. • Let’s read the first two paragraphs. • After I read the first two paragraphs, what generalization can I make about Victor? I can find evidence that Victor was usually nervous about what others think about him.

  13. Predict and Set Purpose • I can find evidence from the text to support my generalization. What evidence can you find? • I can predict what will happen to Victor at the dance. I think that because Victor is so worried, he will not have a good time. • I can now set a purpose for reading the rest of the story: to find out if Victor will have a good time at the dance.

  14. Vocabulary • Dalmatian- certain breed of dog • The spotted dog was a Dalmatian. • sprained- wrenched and twisted • I couldn’t play anymore, I had a sprained ankle. Teach your partner these words.

  15. Vocabulary • promenading- strolling • We spent all of our time promenading down the shopping street. • Frilly- ruffled • She couldn’t stand that frilly dress. • Teach your partner these words.

  16. Vocabulary • Substitute- replacement • The kids didn’t like the substitute teacher. Teach your partner this word.

  17. Spelling • Prefix over- over • Prefix under- not enough or not done as well or as much as is necessary • Prefix sub- below • Prefix out- going further or being better than

  18. Pronouns and Antecedents Pronoun- a word that substitutes nouns or noun phrases He, she, it, they, we, him, her, us Antecedent- a word, phrase or clause that determines what a pronoun refers to

  20. Writing • Persuasive writing; • Introductory paragraph-your position • Each paragraph should focus on your evidence • Describe and then prove the opposing views key points wrong • Restate and reinforce the thesis and supporting evidence
