In turn, we don’t have the time or funds to do other maintenance, thereby increasing our future problems.
Avionics failures are one of my biggest headaches. No one would argue that the technology prevalent in today’s aircraft is leaps and bounds above what was being used in the 1980’s. What is not understood by many is that we have incurred a huge increase in the amount of time it takes to maintain all of the gee whiz systems installed on modern aircraft. Avionics are particularly susceptible to corrosion in that it does not take much electrical resistance for a connection to fail. Therefore, a failed connection results in an aircraft that is non-mission capable. Readiness is down.

6. The training course consists of a 3-4 hour classroom training session followed by a 1-hour hands-on training session with your aircraft.
The Corrosion Assistance Teams provide, at no cost to the units, corrosion prevention and control training and hands-on assistance aimed at all levels of maintenance personnel.

We travel around the world to unit locations providing corrosion prevention and control training and assistance. We also talk with the maintenance personnel in those units about the corrosion problems that they are experiencing and what has been working for them. Since we deal with all the different aircraft, we are able to pass what worked for one type aircraft on to other types of aircraft. [click]
We also pass corrosion problems that field units are experiencing on to the Program or Project Mangers for that aircraft. Every 2 months, we host a Corrosion IPT meeting that has representatives from all the PMs and the R&D community present where we highlight corrosion problems that the field units are experiencing. We also help to coordinate corrosion related research and development activities to help solve some of the issues that field units experience. [click]
We keep an eye on industry and other services to find new products and materials that might be useful on our aircraft.
We research better tools to use. One of those items is the 3M Bristle disk. [If you brought some with you, show them to the class]
We also coordinate the introduction of these new materials and tools into the system.
We also provide expert technical advice to units and PM offices on corrosion issues. We have a real-live engineer that is very versed in the corrosion field. In fact, he helped put this class together. Just recently there was a situation where a USAR startup unit in Ft. Carson was issued a CH-47 from CCAD. When they did their acceptance inspection, they ended up grounding the aircraft due to corrosion. When we were notified of it, we offered assistance and sent our engineer out to Ft. Carson to help them. We can and will do the same for you.How we can help you. [click]
