Welcome! Parent’s Information Evening Year 9 GCSE History Battlefields Tour to Ypres and the Somme Wed 2nd July – Thurs 3rd July 2014
The History department at Cumberland School is committed to making learning enjoyable, relevant and making everyone understand that "History Matters!". In this year 2014, the History department is stepping up our quest to fulfil this commitment by ensuring we commemorate the centenary anniversary of the First World War.
In November last year, Cumberland School held special assemblies on Remembrance day. We do this every year. Last year’s assembly, we involved our pupils by getting them to write their own messages of remembrance.
In March, Cumberland School took the whole of Year 8 to Stratford Theatre Royal to watch ‘Oh What a Lovely War’.
In March and April, 24 Year 8 Cumberland School pupils were involved in a project with the Imperial War Museum. We were one of only four schools to get chosen for the project in the whole of London.
In July, Cumberland School will be getting a theatre company to come in and put on a play about WWI for the whole of Year 7.
On Wednesday 2nd and Thursday 3rd July, Cumberland School will be taking out 44 Year 9 GCSE History pupils on a 2 day/1 night battlefields tour to Ypres and the Somme. The visit is being funded by a charitable donation made to our school by Clifford Chance, an international law firm based in Canary Wharf. Cumberland School has good links with Clifford Chance and we work closely with them on a number of projects to benefit our pupils.
It is the centenary of the First World War. It is important to learn about and commemorate the events of WW1. • Acknowledge the importance of key historical events • Witness the sheer scale of trench warfare • Imagine conditions for those who fought in WWI • Study artefacts and sources in their original context • Draw conclusions about events and their consequences Why are we going?
This trip has been organised by Equity who have specialised in tailor-made school tours for over 20 years Equity is a member of ABTA and holds an ATOL license. Therefore all monies paid are fully financially protected. Who are we going with? Equity is a member Learning Outside the Classroom and the School Travel Forum who have strict policies on safety and best practice.
