World Values Surveys • worldwide investigation of sociocultural and political change • builds on the European Values Surveys, first carried out in 1981 • Second wave 1990-1991 • third wave was carried out in 1995-1996 • fourth wave is taking place in 1999-2001
World Values Surveys (WVS) • hundreds of publications in more than a dozen languages • Subsets used in textbooks and computer programs • grew out of a study launched by the European Values Survey group (EVS) • Original motivation said to be study of decline of church attendance
