Why Are You Here? 1 Corinthians 11:23-26 Maundy Thursday
On the southeastern peninsula of Scotland is the territory called Iona.
In 563 AD, the Irish missionary St. Columba was exiled to the little Island of Iona and established a small religious community. He died just four years later. But thanks to the work he began on Iona, Christianity spread throughout Scotland and eventually on to Europe.
We are here because the Master told us to be here. “For I received from the Lord what I also passed on to you: The Lord Jesus, on the night he was betrayed, took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and said, ‘This is my body, which is for you; do this in remembrance of me.’
We are here because the Master told us to be here. In the same way, after supper he took the cup, saying, ‘This cup is the new covenant in my blood; do this, whenever you drink it, in remembrance of me.’ For whenever you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until he comes.”
Buzz Aldrin knew why he was here. It was July of 1969 “I am the Vine and you are the branches. Whoever remains in Me and I in him, will bear much fruit; for without Me you can do nothing.”
We are also here because we know the Lord is here with us. “For where two or three gather in my name, there am I with them.” (Matthew 18:20)
John Spirko Rev. David Van Dyke Governor Ted Strickland “It was quiet, we were alone – the three of us.”
We are here so we will never forget what Christ has done for us. “Do this in remembrance of me.”
William Somerset Maugham • Born: Jan. 15, 1874 • Died: Dec. 16, 1965 • Fought in World War 1 • Novelist & Playwright “It’s my reminder, so I never take my blessings for granted!”
Why are we here? Because the Master told us to be here! Because we know the Lord is here! So that we will never, ever forget what He has done for us!
