  1. MAE 490Introduction to Engineering Design Fall 2009 Possible Design Projects

  2. Possible Design Projects_09F • Women in Defense will sponsor a team ($200) to improve and refine the hardware and documentation associated with a Fluid Flow Circuit. • Lunar Regolith Excavator ($5000) http://www.parabolicarc.com/2009/06/28/ksc-host-student-lunar-regolith-challenge/ • Dr. Randall Lanier requires a special hinge to be designed for a unique ladder that he is developing. • Dr. Tim Blackwell (blackwet@email.uah.edu) in the UAH Center for Applied Optics has a thin-disk laser that they would like to use to power small UAVs. He needs some students to package the equipment in such a way that it could be carried and operated by a single soldier. This would require a mock-up of the device.

  3. Possible Design Projects • Dr. Landrum requires a device to retro-fit into the wind tunnel and automatically set and monitor the angle of attack. The last attempt by a design team was much too large. Steve Collins has some ideas that could work. • Dr. Landrum and Dr. Moser would like to link a Wii controller to a flight simulator. The idea is to fly the simulator while transmitting real flight commands to an unseen UAV. This could be demonstrated with a simple foam aircraft. • Dr. Landrum (MAE Dept.) needs to design a ground test for a rocket deployed sensor. This would entail retro-reflectors and possibly an active laser beacon for the sensor to track as it flies down on a parafoil or UAV. This would probably fit best in the spring (2010).

  4. Possible Design Projects • During the study abroad in Germany last summer (2008) Dr. Landrum observed single person "M&M shaped“ devices that a person sits on. A sensor then plays a description of the local building or view, including sound effects. Dr. Landrum would like to devise something similar for the UAH campus. Another option is to have these devices wirelessly detect a signal from a person and play content of specific interest. For example, a high school student interested in engineering would get info related to classes he might take in the building where he is physically located.
