The history of the name“degan” or “kelapamuda” or young coconut • Long-long lime ago in the colonial era, there was a colonial Dutch soldier named Van Gumoh going from Western Yogyakarta to Kulonprogro. He had many belongings to bring. • As the colonizer, he asked a Javanese named Ngatipar to accompany him. Ngatipar had to bring Gumoh’s properties. • Walking across the woods at the shiny day in the dry season, they were so tired and exhausted. • Around the place we know today as Nanggulan, they ran out of water. • The Dutch was so angry to Ngatipar :

  2. “you drink too much Ngatipar!” See, there is no water left!” • “no, Sir. I don’t drink at all.” • “You lie…!” • “No, Sir, I am also thirsty.” • “Thirsty ha?....ha..ha..ha…!” Go to that river! You can drink as much you want…hahaha! • After a while they continued walking….

  3. Haa…wait a moment Ngatipar. There is something there…look up….(watching the tall tree…with the green and round fruit) • Ngatipar…ngatipar..the gun…the gun…(while looking up) • Ngatipar took the gun from the soldier’s bag and gave it to Van Gumoh. He shot the fruits and they fell off the ground. • “Open some with your sickle,” said Gumoh to Ngatipar. Gumoh drank much of coconut water and give some to Ngatipar. • Later on Ngatipar told the villagers that the young coconut fruit is “Degan” (The Gun) • This is how Degan gets its name.
