  2. Set a Goal a. Pick something to achieve: get a B on an exam b. Figure out steps to get to that goal – (e.g., finish the readings, go through the lecture notes, practice exams/note cards, etc.) c. Large goals are overwhelming, do it step by step

  3. Accomplish Goals A. Set a timeline *Which day is the exam? *How difficult is the course? (Difficult courses may need a longer timeline than easier courses) *Make sure it is a realistic timeline (include work and social activities, if you can’t study for long periods of time, break up your studying into shorter, more frequent study sessions) *Alternate studying between courses (unless you are very behind and have to focus on only one goal at a time)

  4. Accomplish Goals B. Know best strategies to accomplish goal *Environment *Time of day *Organization (including making sure you have all materials)

  5. Accomplish Goals C. Know barriers to success *What are your biggest obstacles to staying on track when studying for an exam?

  6. Accomplish Goals D. How to overcome barriers *May need a new plan *May need to sacrifice *Better time management *Avoid procrastination *Improve organization *Improve study habits

  7. Accomplish Goals E. Mark off each small goal you’re achieving *Feels as if you have accomplished something instead of only considering a goal “done” when it is completely finished.

  8. Tools for Time Management and Goal Setting • Paper forms: monthly calendars, weekly schedule sheets • Technology: computer schedules (Google calendar), alarm reminders on phone, online timers (www.mytomatoes.com) • Other tools: plan using course syllabus, use DRES academic coaching program
