  1. 824 Describe the chemical makeup of the atmosphere.

  2. Describe the chemical makeup of the atmosphere. Key concepts/skills: Level 1: Define key vocabulary. Level 2: Understand the chain of events that transformed the earth’s early atmosphere into what we know today. Level 3: Know the gases of today’s atmosphere and percentages of the atmosphere that each makes up.

  3. Describe the chemical makeup of the atmosphere. Key vocabulary • Atmosphere • Water vapor • Cyanobacteria • Photosynthesis

  4. Describe the chemical makeup of the atmosphere. • Earth’s Early Atmosphere • Atmosphere- the layers of different gases that surround the earth • Earth’s early atmosphere is made mostly of the following gases (which came mostly from inside the earth) • Water vapor, Hydrogen, Nitrogen, Carbon dioxide, Methane, and Carbon Monoxide • Note there was little or no available oxygen in the atmosphere

  5. Describe the chemical makeup of the atmosphere. • Earth’s Atmosphere Today • Water vapor began to condense and fall as rain which eventually created the oceans • In the early oceans, cyanobacteria the first photosynthetic organisms, gave off the first oxygen in the atmosphere. • Once there was enough oxygen, green plants evolved and added even more oxygen to the atmosphere. • About 350 million years ago the Earth’s atmosphere stabilized

  6. Today the Earth’s Atmosphere contains the following: • Nitrogen 78% • Oxygen 21% some is Ozone O3 • Argon .94% • Carbon Dioxide .03% Has increased slightly in the past 200 years • Neon .001% • Helium .0005% • Methane .00015% • Water Vaper Varies from 0.0 to 1.0%
