  2. Orthopaedics - Straight. - Children Ortho Paedics An Orthopod (Amer.) practices Orthopedic Surgery The name has nothing to do with feet !!!!

Orthopaedics • Only existed as a branch of General Surgery before the Second World War. • Largely consisted of the treatment of Fractures. • After WW2, returning veterans had a variety of permanent injuries, requiring a new subspecialty with new knowledge. • In 1952, Polio struck North America, affecting the “baby boomers” primarily.

Orthopaedics Imagine a world, made “free for democracy” at the cost of millions of lives, that now had to deal with the highly visible, human cost of that victory maimed soldiers, and betrayed by polio, that affected the first fruit of that victory young children, born to the very people that had suffered to win the war.

  5. Orthopaedics This produced a huge psychologic effect on most of the western world. Interest was generated in the field of medically correctible deformity. - fractures. - congenital deformities. - amputations. - paediatric illness.

  6. Orthopaedics With the recognition and acceptance of a systems approach to medicine, Orthopaedics evolved into the treatment of diseases of the - Arthritis. - Geriatrics. - Bone and Soft Tissue Tumours. - Metabolic Diseases involving bone. Locomotor System.

  7. Orthopaedics Locomotor Diseases are treated by 3 subspecialties - Orthopaedics - surgical. - Rheumatology - medical. - Physiatry - rehabilitative.

  8. Orthopaedics The surgical treatment of:- - Fractures. - Arthritis. - Soft Tissue Injuries. - Skeletal Deformities. - Bone Tumours. - Developmental Skeletal Diseases.

  9. Orthopaedics BUT:- This crosses may interdisciplinary boundaries. - Spinal Surgery. - Trauma. - Hand Surgery. - Rehabilitation. - Reconstructive Surgery. - Research.

  10. Orthopaedics Training:- - A five year residency - General Surgery. - Plastics. - ICU. - General Medicine. - Neurosurgery. and - Three years of Orthopaedics.

  11. Orthopaedics Training:- - most residents also undertake two years of fellowship. - required for a university appointment. - recommended for Community practice.

  12. Orthopaedics Position availability:- Orthopaedics is a growth industry. - the aging population. - epidemic Osteoporosis. - Sports - injuries & arthritis. - Gravity.

  13. Orthopaedics Position availability:- Orthopaedics is a growth industry. - The interdisciplinary nature of the specialty, probably means that there will always be a place for any physician with this expertise. Pity the cardiac surgeons!

  14. Orthopaedics Working Conditions:- The stereotypical perception of Orthopaedic work:- - work all day, work all night. - low priority surgery. - little drama. - podiatry, osteopathy, chiropractic and orthopaedics. (“Don’t you guys just fix feet”)

  15. Orthopaedics Working Conditions:- The recognition of the work load and importance of Orthopaedics has led to major changes in the working environment. trauma rooms support staff fees hospital budgets

  16. Orthopaedics Working Conditions:- No Oncology No Paediatrics No Trauma No Surgery - if you don’t want it.

  17. Orthopaedics Working Conditions:- The truth is that the three happiest disciplines for the practitioner are:- Obstetrics give them babies! Ophthalmology make them see! Orthopaedics make them walk!

  18. Orthopaedics Working Conditions:- Lest we forget, Orthopaedics is the only specialty with its own government agency, The W.S.I.B. which in Ontario, has a $20 B dollar budget.
