Why Cite • Writing is a conversation • Writing a persuasive paper is a part of an academic conversation • To help your readers join in, you need to explain how your writing fits into this conversation • You do this through citing sources that are credible and have already participated in this conversation

  3. For a source to be credible… • Claims should be up to date • Claims should be based in fact • Not exaggerated • Relate directly to your argument

  4. When including research • Choose sources carefully • Make sure they are reliable • In the online community, .edu, .org, and .gov websites are preferred

  5. Good research … • Writing provokes research • Stimulates the readers mind • Helps them “continue” the conversation

  6. Citing respects the source • Thanks the original writer • Respects the honor code against plagiarism
