Consider the ICT package in your setting.. A What are you confidently in or doing well? B What are you doing fairly well, but with some challenges? C What are you having problems with, or finding a challenge? ICT is as easy as A B C?
I.C.T. gives children the opportunity to… • Problem solve • Communicate and collaborate • Create links between skills and understanding • Be motivated to learn • Handle information
What is the Value of ICT? • Confidently handle equipment. • Repeatedly practise manipulative skills. • Use language to explain and discuss. • Seek help when needed. • Develop their awareness of when to use certain programs. E.g. Using a paint program to ‘draw’. • Use technology as it would be used in the ‘real world’, e.g. in role-play.
The 7 Principles of Good Practice for ICT ICT within a Unique Child A Unique Child • Ensure an educational purpose • Encourage collaboration • Integrate with other aspects of the curriculum • Ensure the child is in control • Choose applications that are transparent • Avoid applications containing violence or stereotypes • Be aware of health and safety issues

Learning Environment • “Children learn by a process of actively constructing their own understandings. All the evidence suggests that a learning environment which helps children to do this will, not surprisingly be one which challenges them intellectually and stimulates them to be mentally active.” Whitebread 1996 • Effective ICT provision is making use of resources in all areas of the environment. • Expensive equipment, such as digital cameras, may encourage us to store it away from play-dough and paint! Remind children that they can ask to use it by putting a picture of the camera in the construction or creative area.
How resources could be placed for independent access and creative play.
Role Play Area • Resourcing role-play areas need not be costly. • Use old or nonworking equipment, equipment made from junk models and some child friendly ICT resources. • Creating the ‘junk’ equipment together opens up opportunities for children to talk about buttons and switches and how things work.
