  1. Monday 13th June 2011 UNIT 3 – CONTESTED PLANET Objectives: - To be aware of the different ways of defining biodiversity. - To understand the processes and factors influencing biodiversity. - To describe and explain the distribution of biodiversity hotspots. Topic 3: Biodiversity under threat

  2. What is this topic about? Biodiversity under Threat is the third of the ‘resources’ topics It examines the nature of biological resources, essentially plants and animals, and how people use and conserve them The earth’s biosphere represents a critical part of the planet as a life support system How humans act towards the biosphere reveals a great deal about their priorities, attitudes and understanding. Biodiversity’s future? An endangered Kangaroo in San Diego Zoo

  3. Objectives: - To be aware of the different ways of defining biodiversity. - To understand the processes and factors influencing biodiversity. - To describe and explain the distribution of biodiversity hotspots. Starter Per 100 Km² Picture 2 Picture 1 How would you describe this image? Does this look like a special place worth saving from development?

  4. Objectives: - To be aware of the different ways of defining biodiversity. - To understand the processes and factors influencing biodiversity. - To describe and explain the distribution of biodiversity hotspots.

  7. Objectives: - To be aware of the different ways of defining biodiversity. - To understand the processes and factors influencing biodiversity. - To describe and explain the distribution of biodiversity hotspots. • 1] Teacher led notes on the following: • Defining Biodiversity; • Processes and factors influencing biodiversity; • The global distribution of biodiversity, and • Biodiversity hotspots. 2] Student Activities focussed on ‘The Arctic National Wildlife Refuge (ANWR) – a tundra ecosystem under threat.’ Read pg.’s 94 to 99 in the A2 textbook and complete the following activities: 1. Describe the characteristics of the ANWR in terms of its: - climate, - vegetation, - soils, & - animals.

  8. Objectives: - To be aware of the different ways of defining biodiversity. - To understand the processes and factors influencing biodiversity. - To describe and explain the distribution of biodiversity hotspots. • What is primary productivity? • Prudhoe Bay is on the northern coast of Alaska to the west of the ANWR. What is happening to the oil reserves in this area? Why does the USA want oil from the ANWR? • What is meant by the term playersin terms of the development of the ANWR? • Produce a spider diagram detailing the viewpoints of the different players involved in the proposed development of the ANWR. Identify those players in favour of the development of the ANWR and those that are not. • Complete Qu. 2 (pg. 99). Ensure your table is detailed and A4 sized! • What is being done to protect the ANWR? • What is President Barack Obama expected to do to protect the ANWR?
