  1. Unit 8-Psychological PerspectivesTask 3M2&D1GC Support PowerPoint Assignment Scenario: You are a psychology student who has been asked to undertake some research as part of the initiative ‘Improving Access to Psychological Therapies’. On your work placement you have been asked to explore the need for larger and broader therapy and counselling services for the service users in your locality. This research will offer you the opportunity to assess, compare and evaluate two psychological approaches to health and social care provision and identify how, with the help of the psychological perspectives, individuals can be supported further in your locality.

  2. Writing Frame for Task 3(This provides evidence for [M2,D1]) Compare two psychological approaches to health and social care service provision (M2) Evaluate two psychological approaches to health and social care service provision (D1) Choose two psychological perspectives from: Behaviourist, Social Learning, Psychodynamic, Humanistic, Cognitive/Information Processing and Biological. PLEASE NOTE THAT ONLY TWO PERSPECTIVES SHOULD FORM THE BASIS OF THE REPORT. THERE SHOULD ALSO BE CLEAR EVIDENCE OF ANY RESOURCES USED WITHIN A REFERENCE LIST (WHERE APPLICABLE).

  3. Having now studied our first two perspectives you are able to complete this task How? The principles of both Humanistic and Cognitive Psychology is often used in Health and Social Care

  4. Why? • Both these types of therapies are commonly used to treat a person with a mental health illness. • Why do you think this is? • Think back to your P2 and P3 for both of these perspectives- what are their key principles? • NOTE THEM DOWN. • Then compare your lists- How many are similar? How many are different?

  5. Case Study Example • As a trainee teacher I worked as a PGCE Student English Tutor. I was hired by Coventry City Council to support a fifteen year old student who lived in foster care. He was struggling at school as he was mourning the loss of his Grandad who he used to live with after his parents had been killed in a car accident when he was in primary school. ‘Matthew’ had Dyslexia and had recently been diagnosed with depression.

  6. ‘Matthew’ • In his English classes especially he found it hard to concentrate and as he struggled (and disliked) reading (which he also thought was boring)he was at risk of not achieving the C he needed to study his A Levels at college. The council had stepped in to try to make sure he had the best chance possible on achieving his goal. • So what did I do? • I tried both cognitive and humanistic psychology principles to try and support him…

  7. Kelly’s Personal Construct Psychology (Cognitive) • Recap: • PCP is widely used in education and management to make sense of how an individual views the world or processes information… • So what was ‘Matthew’ interested in? HISTORY • His grandfather had been interested in the First World War and ‘Matthew’ had grown up listening to his stories. ‘Matthew’ seemed happiest when telling me these stories and so I decided to use this to help improve his reading with…

  8. I decided to try a book that I hoped he would find funny too rather than ‘boring’ ‘Matthew’ loved this and then would develop on the stories with those his Grandad told him. He would then write these stories down to improve his literacy skills.

  9. Why? • Kelly’s Personal Construct Psychology teaches us that we shape the world around us by what interests us. By starting my sessions with ‘Matthew’ he got to see that his love of history could be incorporated into passing his English GCSE. • This also links to the work of a Cognitive Psychologist called Aaron Beck…

  10. Aaron Beck • Beck’s work focused on supporting individuals with depression by getting the individual to challenge their negative thoughts and to encourage them to develop alternative, more positive, ways of seeing the world.

  11. The Humanistic Principles Remember for P2/P3 with this perspective we looked at the following principles: • Empathy • Understanding • Active Listening • Respecting other Individuals and adopting a non-judgemental approach How did I go about showing each of these with ‘Matthew’?

  12. How were the techniques I used similar/different? (M2)

  13. What are the strengths and weaknesses of each perspective? (D1)

  14. What are the strengths and weaknesses of each perspective? (D1)

  15. Over to you • M2 and D1 will be easier if you can shape it around a case study too. • You could consider this one… Case Study A resident in a care home was staring out of the window. The sun was shining, birds were singing and the first flowers of spring were in bloom, but the person with depression saw only blank emptiness stretching ahead. CONSIDER THE PSYCHOLOGY I USED- how could you use the perspectives to support this service user?

  16. Your M2/D1 • Either use or create a case study to work through the writing frame (available on Moodle) • As this is needs to apply to health and social care try and choose an issue such as mental health as it is covered by both sectors (Depression in particular is a good topic for this assignment)
