  1. Keratoconjunctivitis • @ Inflammation of both conjunctiva and • cornea • Symptoms: • @ Red eye, watery discharge • @ Pain on looking at bright light. • @ Oedema of conjunctiva and eyelids • @ Subconjunctival haemorrhage

  2. Infectious causes of conjunctivitis: • @ Bacteria: • # S. aureus • # H. influenzae • # Str. pneumoniae • # Chlamydia trachomatis • # N. gonorrhoeae • # Ps. aeruginosa. • @ Fungi: • # Candida

  3. @ Viruses: • # Adenoviruses • # Herpes simplex virus • # Varicella-zoster virus • # Enteroviruses, e.g. Coxsackie A24 • # Measles. • @ Parasites: • # Acanthamoeba • # Onchocerca volvulus

  4. Diagnosis of Viral Keratoconjunctivitis: • @ Collect swabs in viral transport medium • @ Tissue culture up to 3 weeks • @ Electron microscopy of stool to detect • enteric adenoviruses • @ Detection of adenovirus antigens by • immunofluorescence • @ Serology: A rising titre of antibodies • is detected in paired sera.

  5. Investigation of Nosocomial Eye Infection • @ Culture eye swabs and type all isolates • @ Note the collecion dates of eye swabs • @ Determine the community-acquired • infections (patients attending hospital • for the first time) • @ Determine the nosocomial infection • (patients are reattenders)

  6. Herpes simplex Eye Infections: • @ Primary conjunctivitis (self-inoculation) • @ Acute conjunctivitis and keratitis • @ Corneal ulcers • @ Chronic keratitis, ulceration, scarring
