    6. 6 What is UMLER? “Universal Machine Language Equipment Register” First industry-wide central equipment database Created in 1968 Central file for over 1.7 million units Locomotives, EOT’s, MOW and passenger cars 1/2 million trailers, containers and chassis Processes equipment data changes Ownership, weight, components, attributes, dimensions, ABT and FRA inspection dates and pool information Processes over 600,000 transactions monthly Mission and safety critical to almost all railway applications

    14. 14 What’s Changing in Phase 2 February 26, 2006 Single Car Air Brake Test System shut-down UMLER ON LINE (TSUM) is 12 hour batch, but EMIS is real time Adds versus ABT reporting Legacy UMLER Pool Message (Umler 72-74-75) retired TRAIN II reporting of EMIS elements only via EMIS Umler01 data ignored Outbound messages and reports continue to contain ABT data, but some elements will be missing FRA locomotive, Flat/Rack inspection only via EMIS

Q4 2007 Equipment characteristics Adds/deletes/modifications Restenciling Component management Status management All reporting via Umler® EMIS Umler® online (TSUM) application will be retired Replaced by Umler® EMIS application Legacy Umler TRAIN II messaging retired (Umler 01, 71)

    16. 16 Work to Get There Review UMLER data from the perspective of what is needed in the national file Recognized that more data is needed for owners What is needed for interchange What is needed for safety Reconcile existing UMLER fields Fields that are used for multiple purposes need to be split Unused fields need to be retired Fields with duplicate meanings need to be clarified Review new fields that have been requested Are they still needed Get back to the Umler committee by Year end 2005 (Needed now for spec writing)
