  1. Communicating in a Growing Company The Essentials of Giving and Receiving Feedback

  2. Workshop Essentials • At the end of the next 30 – 40 minutes, you will have • Named positive elements of feedback • Listed challenges to feedback • Explored principles and practices for giving effective feedback • Reviewed key feedback words

  3. Example 1 • You develop an idea for improving one of the outreach efforts at the church. You spend an evening writing a two page proposal and submit it to the head of outreach. After 1 month you have heard nothing. You wonder, did he like my idea?

  4. Example 2 At a meeting with the head of usher board, Mary is told, “You’re doing a good job,” “Keep up the good work.” As Mary leaves the meeting she wonders, “What am I doing well? I want to keep doing it but I am not sure what ‘it’ is.”

  5. Example 3 John is enthusiastic about bringing people to the Lord, In spite of the training provided to the group, John continues to approach non believers in a manner inconsistent with the training. His approach is upsetting to team members and maybe interfering with the spread of the gospel.

  6. Working Definition of Feedback What is feedback? The return of information about the result of a process or activity; an evaluative response. Whenever, we respond to another person we are giving feedback

  7. Feedback to the Institution • Indirect Feedback. • 20 people are lined up outside church 30 minutes before the door was scheduled to be opened on a regular basis. • Direct Feedback • 20 people came to know Christ at the Kingdom Concert in June.

  8. Exploring Feedback ExerciseGroups 1, 3 In groups 1 and 3, create 2 lists. • On one list, name at least 10 reasons for giving feedback. • On a second list name at least 10 good reasons for receiving feedback. • What do you notice about the two lists? Share your thoughts with each other. • Now combine the two lists with the best reason as #1 through 10.

  9. Exploring Feedback Exercise – Groups 2,4 • In groups 2 and 4, create 2 lists. • On one list name at least 10 reasons for not giving feedback. • On a second list name at least 10 reasons for not receiving feedback. • What do you notice about the two lists? Share your thoughts with each other. • Now combine the lists. with the best reason as #1 through 10.

  10. Giving Effective Feedback • Feedback is effective if it is…… • Specific rather than General • Descriptive rather than Judgmental • Directed toward a behavior the receiver can do something about • Well-timed • Takes into account both the giver and receiver

  11. Receiving Feedback Receiving Feedback is enhanced if you can.. • Avoid explaining or defending “why I did that.” • Remember – feedback is only one person’s perception of your action, not universal truth. • Waite until the feedback is given before you say anything.

  12. Cont. • Accept that giving feedback is hard and choose to not make it harder through your body language, attitude or retort. Think of feedback as a gift.

  13. Receiving Feedback Cont. • Help the giver stick with the criteria for giving good feedback • If you see a pattern in the feedback you are getting from several sources, check it out.

  14. Feedback Words “Thank you” “I like” “How About….” or “Consider….” “Lose the But Bridge”
