  1. Forsaken David Caron MD

  2. Matthew 27:33-46 • 33They came to a place called Golgotha (which means “the place of the skull”). 34 There they offered Jesus wine to drink, mixed with gall; but after tasting it, he refused to drink it. 35 When they had crucified him, they divided up his clothes by casting lots. 36 And sitting down, they kept watch over him there. 37 Above his head they placed the written charge against him: this is Jesus, the king of the Jews. 38Two rebels were crucified with him, one on his right and one on his left. 39 Those who passed by hurled insults at him, shaking their heads 40 and saying, “You who are going to destroy the temple and build it in three days, save yourself! Come down from the cross, if you are the Son of God!”

  3. Matthew 27:33-46 (cont’d) • 41 In the same way the chief priests, the teachers of the law and the elders mocked him. 42“He saved others,” they said, “but he can’t save himself! He’s the king of Israel! Let him come down now from the cross, and we will believe in him. 43He trusts in God. Let God rescue him now if he wants him, for he said, ‘I am the Son of God.’ ” 44 In the same way the rebels who were crucified with him also heaped insults on him. 45 From noon until three in the afternoon darkness came over all the land. 46About three in the afternoon Jesus cried out in a loud voice, “Eli, Eli,lemasabachthani?” (which means “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?”)

  4. Montgomery, James (November 4, 1771–April 30, 1854), • Well-known Scottish newspaperman and poet. He edited the Sheffield Iris, and wrote many hymns, including What Is Prayer?, in which he penned: • Prayer is the soul’s sincere desire • Uttered or unexpressed; • The motion of a hidden fire • That trembles in the breast.

  5. President McKinley on Prayer • As hundreds of people were in line to shake his hand, an anarchist, named Leon Czolgosz, shot President William McKinley in the stomach. As he was being put under anesthetic, he was praying the Lord’s Prayer. On September 14, 1901, infection from the wounds took its toll. From a near coma, President William McKinley spoke: • It is useless, gentlemen, I think we ought to have prayer. [Then, to his wife, he said], It is God’s will. His will, not ours, be done. • His last words, spoken to his wife, Ida Saxton Mckinley, were from the hymn: • Nearer My God to Thee

  6. Original Sin • Genesis 2:15-17 15 The Lord God took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden to work it and take care of it. 16 And the Lord God commanded the man, “You are free to eat from any tree in the garden; 17 but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, for when you eat from it you will certainly die.” • Romans 5:12 12 Therefore, just as sin entered the world through one man, and death through sin, and in this way death came to all people, because all sinned— • Romans 6:23 23 For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

  7. Sin’s Payment • Romans 5:12 12 Therefore, just as sin entered the world through one man, and death through sin, and in this way death came to all people, because all sinned— • Romans 6:23 23 For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. • Galatians 3:13 quoting Deuteronomy 21:23 3Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us, for it is written: “Cursed is everyone who is hung on a pole.”

  8. What is the curse • Deuteronomy 11:26-29 26 See, I am setting before you today a blessing and a curse—27 the blessing if you obey the commands of the Lord your God that I am giving you today; 28 the curse if you disobey the commands of the Lord your God and turn from the way that I command you today by following other gods, which you have not known. 29 When the Lord your God has brought you into the land you are entering to possess, you are to proclaim on Mount Gerizim the blessings, and on Mount Ebal the curses • II Cor 5:21 21 God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.

  9. Psalms 22 • Verses 1&2: 1 My God, my God, why have you forsaken me? Why are you so far from saving me, so far from my cries of anguish? 2 My God, I cry out by day, but you do not answer, by night, but I find no rest. • Verses 6-8 6 But I am a worm and not a man, scorned by everyone, despised by the people. 7 All who see me mock me; they hurl insults, shaking their heads. 8 “He trusts in the Lord,” they say, “let the Lord rescue him. Let him deliver him, since he delights in him.” • Verses 14-1814 I am poured out like water, and all my bones are out of joint. My heart has turned to wax; it has melted within me. 15 My mouth is dried up like a potsherd, and my tongue sticks to the roof of my mouth; you lay me in the dust of death. 16 Dogs surround me, a pack of villains encircles me; they pierce g my hands and my feet. 17 All my bones are on display; people stare and gloat over me. 18 They divide my clothes among them and cast lots for my garment. • Verse 24 24 For he has not despised or scorned the suffering of the afflicted one; he has not hidden his face from him but has listened to his cry for help.

  10. Sabachthani • Root Meaning: Loosen the bands • Illustration • Psalms 22:24 For he has not despised or scorned the suffering of the afflicted one; he has not hidden his face from him but has listened to his cry for help. • Hebrews 5:7…he offered up prayers and petitions with fervent cries and tears to the one who could save him from death, and he was heard…

  11. Hebrews 12: 1-2 • 1Therefore we also, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which so easily ensnares us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, 2 looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith, who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.
