Academic Network – University of Montenegro • MREN’s technical body is Center of Information System (CIS) of University of Montenegro. • CIS is responsible for development and maintenance of Academic Network and services for common use in the Network. • Academic Network consist of: • 18 faculties • 4 research institutes • Central library • student dormitories • Ministry of Science and Education is connected on Academic Network • Approximately 20000users of Academic Network

  3. Academic Network – University of Montenegro • Geographically Academic Network spreads across 6 cities: • Podgorica • Cetinje • Nikšić • Bijelo Polje • Herceg-Novi • Kotor

  4. Academic Network – University of Montenegro • CIS provides following services: • web hosting, mail, ftp, dns … • DBs for students and personnel • Internet connectivity • applications for managing student database and University accounting service • GRID • Video conferencing • E-Learning

  5. Monitoring tools • No standardized monitoring tool for all members of University • Only 20 Mbps optical link to Internet requires bandwidth monitoring within the network • Usage of CACTI monitoring tool

  6. Monitoring tools • Cacti is an open source, web-based graphing tool designed as a frontend to RRDtool's data storage and graphing functionality. Cacti allows a user to poll services at predetermined intervals and graph the resulting data. • Cacti uses SNMP protocol to poll data from devices. • A common usage in our network is to monitor network network bandwidth utilization.

Monitoring tools – future plans • Necessity • Monitoring stats of vital servers (CPU, Memory, Disk space, in/out traffic). • Monitoring of type of traffic on access router and on routers in remote PoP’s. • Flexibility in notification options (SMS, e-mail, display in NOC…). • Time of response from all network devices in the core.
