  1. Ella Fitzgerald Ella was born on April 25, 1917 She was born in Newport News, Virginia Her parents were William and Tempie Fitzgerald Her Father left the family They then moved to Yonkers, New York

  2. Family • She has a brother and a sister, Joseph Da Silva. Ella's half-sister, Frances Da Silva, was born in 1923

  3. Life in Yonkers Ella dropped out of school after Her mothers death She began messing around with gangs She got in trouble and was sent To reform school She ran away and was homeless

  4. The Apollo where She made her Debut

  5. Ella’s Debut • Ella debut was at the Apollo in 1934 • It was amateur night • She didn’t plan to sing • She planned to do a dance routine • With her sisters but they messed up • And she began singing

  6. Opportunities • He begun introducing Ella to some famous people • She joined chick Webb band because was in the crowd that night band • For 12.50 an hour

  7. The Band • The band had various hit songs Like “love and kisses” and “If you can’t sing” Chick Webb died in 1939 They renamed the band Ella and Her Famous Orchestra

  16. Ella’s Manager • Ella’s manager felt very strong about Civil Rights and required equal treatment To his musicians • If they got any type of discrimination Ella would just leave the hotel
