  3. Causes • Saddam Hussein,leader of Iraq, took over the Iranian government (Bakr Resign) • Saddam wanted to be the leader of all of Europe • Iran and Iraq had disputed over land previously • Both Wanted the Shatt-al-Arab Waterway

  4. Key Events • 4 major battles from April to August 1988 • Iraqis defeated Iranians • Iraqi Republican Guard & regular army units recaptured Al-Faw peninsula, 36hr battle • Iraqis used chemical weapons
