Cognitive Theory • Four Stages were developed in the cognitive theory to be able to understand the development. • These stages were based on children and that they could go through four separate stages • This help determine that the child had reached a certain level of maturity in order to proceed to the next stage. • These stages were to also help the children learn from experience.
Four Stages of Cognitive • Sensorimotor • Preoperational • Concrete operational • Formal operational
Sensorimotor • Sensorimotor stage: Birth to 2 yrs. old Child has little competence uses images, language, or symbols.
Preoperational • Preoperational stage: 2 yrs to 7 yrs old This most important part of this stage is language development. Is able to describe people, events, and feelings. Viewed from child’s Perspective
Concrete Operational • Concrete operational stage: Have the ability to understand things better. Are able to understand time and space better as well.
Formal Operational • Formal operational stage: 12 yrs old to Adulthood New kind of thinking for example abstract, formal, and logical. Able to solve problems on their own
Behavioral Theorist 1904-1990
Skinner’s Legacy • Influenced by Watson and Pavlov • 1926- Received a B.A. in English literature from Hamilton College. • 1945- Psychology Department Chair at University of Indiana. • 1948- Became part of the psychology department at Harvard University. He stayed their for the rest of his life.
Operant Conditioning • Learning skills through earning rewards and punishments for behavior. • Relation that their will be a consequence for certain behavior.
Behavioral Theory • Behavioral theory focused more on the teaching aspect. • Involved the following: • Breaking the lessons into smaller parts to be learned. • Giving feedback and motivation. • Teaching the content that only relates to that certain subject. • Teacher centered teaching better for classroom behavior.
Application Theory for Adult Learning • Piaget: Stages are followed. In order to proceed the person needs to show a level a maturity. Each stage is learned by experience. • Adult learners follow these steps until they have reached formal operational stage. The abstract, formal, and logical starts to occur. • Skinner: Ability to learn by motivational enforcements. • Giving stickers or certain appraisal for good work, Consequences are to occur if behavior is not met. • Adult learner sometimes get better achievement when they get praised for their work.
