  9. Can I uploaded Microsoft Office 2007 documents to BigBlueButton ? • BigBlueButtonuses OpenOffice 3.2 for converting Microsoft Office documents into PDF for display in BigBlueButton. • Office 2003 documents convert well; however, Office 2007 and Office 2010 documents (such as .pptx) are problematic with OpenOffice 3.2. In particular, the font alignment is not precise. • If you are using Office 2007, we recommend using Microsoft's free download to enable an Office 2007 to save any document to PDF: download link. • You'll always get the best results with PDF.

  10. A little bit of history • In 2007 Carleton University, Canada  wanted a way to reach distance learners effectively without huge expense. • As the university taught engineers to be entrepreneurs a post-graduate student was challenged to create an open source web conferencing system for the university. • He succeeded, the project expanded beyond the University and a BBB community began to develop around the world.

  11. Press the (Big Blue) Button 2010 • Google provided funding for two developers • Moving to GitHub for source code made it easier for developers around the world to contribute 2011 • December BigBlueButtonproject was invited to join WebFWD - Mozillasaccelerator program to support open innovation on the web. “ we want to make BBB the best open source web conferencing software in the world!” Carlton University (creators of Big Blue Button)

  15. The JISC SWEET Project Synchronous Web Enabled Employee Training (SWEET) Learning and teaching innovation fund, Jan - Dec 2011 Used BigBlueButton to allow distance learners to join the classroom Objectives To overcome Workbasedlearning inherent difficulties: 1) limited access to direct tutor support; 2) efficiency of delivery for small numbers of learners; 3) the quality of the learning experience for isolated students. http://www.jisc.ac.uk/whatwedo/programmes/elearning/swaniltig/sweet.aspx

  16. Moodle/BigBlueButtonat Jewel & Esk College – SWEET Project • Fully operational College since April 2011 • Tested in the REHIS Elementary Food Hygiene course • Simultaneously delivery to classroom-based cohorts and remote students participating in the class via BigBlueButton, with Moodle used to support elements of course delivery. • 24 of the 25 students on the course passed

  17. BigBlueButtonJoins WebFWD • WebFWD(“Web Forward”) is Mozilla’s Open Innovation program. • it support Open Source projects which extend the Web — providing participants with mentorship from industry experts, • access to the Mozilla global network, • infrastructure and other world-class resources.

  18. Talking about Big Blue Button The interface feels slick and less clunky than some other systems I’ve used. It may lack some of the bells and whistles of those systems, but in my experience, they are tools that are less often needed in remote presentations. Steve Boneham Learning Technologist at JISC Netskills

  19. BBB could be hosted on Janet 2Gb free server space (need to speak to Robert Prabuki to see which sectors can use this service, probably just FE & 6FC) • BBB will integrate with Moodle  • It has a really nice translator built into the chat facility (good for ESOL or language courses) • Simple interface, now includes record facility (with extra installation of recordingsbn) Malcolm Bodley, E-Learning Advisor (FE) RSC Eastern
