  1. Writing Notes Transition Words and Personal Pronoun Use

  2. Transition Words • Transitions. In writing, a transition is the smooth progression from one idea to another. A good transition helps the reader see how ideas are connected. Transitions can signal different types of relationships.

  3. Transition Words • Different Types of Transitions: • Sequential Order: first, during, before, second, then, at the beginning, at the same time, afterwards, soon, next, finally, subsequently, last, already, later. • Order of Importance: first, second, best, worst, main, most important, least important • Cause and Effect: because, therefore, as a result, so, for, thus, since.

  4. Transition Words • Different Types of Transitions: • Spatial Order: above, behind, near, to the right, past, in front of, beneath, to • Comparison and Contrast: but, however, unlike, in contrast, yet, although, even though, similarly, even though, like, both, each. • Matters of Degree: furthermore, ideally, upmost, in addition, definitely, ultimately, moreover, even more, more so

  5. Personal Pronouns • Personal pronouns to avoid: I, me, my, mine, you • Personal pronouns okay to use: he, him, she, her, it

  6. Take out the personal pronouns and add transition words. • I think Poseidon is a lot like Arnold Schwarzeneggar. Both were very powerful. They both had lots of affairs with women. Both made a name for themselves. Both thought nothing could bring them down. It was sad to see it happen to both of them.

  7. Take out the personal pronouns and add transition words. • Medusa is a lot like Isle Koch, the brutal Nazi. Medusa was once beautiful and was turned into an ugly being. Isle Koch was very beautiful on the outside. Inside, she was a horrid monster. She did terrible things to the Jews of the WWII concentration camps. My report is on how both of them are the same.

  8. Take out the personal pronouns and add transition words. • Athena was the goddess of wisdom. She had many talents. She had a large role in the Trojan War. Her advice helped Odysseus. I think she is very much like Oprah Winfrey. Her knowledge has helped many people around her.
