  2. Fifth Grade Community Agreements • Respect self, others, and property. • Have fun safely! • Everyone participates and communicates. • Always try your best. • Be a problem solver.

  3. Ways to Help Your Fifth Grader Succeed: • Check and sign your child’s planner/agenda every day. • Ask questions about homework. • Ask your child to share one highlight and one challenge from his/her day. • Ask your child to teach you something they learned today. • Read class and school newsletters. • Attend PTA meetings, conferences, and school events when possible.

  4. Volunteer Opportunities • Project assistant. (auction, grade level gift) • Assisting with classroom parties. (Halloween, Valentine's Day) • Room parents. • Fit Friday participant or snack provider. • Field Trip chaperones. (Hemlock, Smithsonian) • Grade level event assistant. (Greek Olympics, Poetry Cafe, Science experiments)

  7. Grade 5 Topics of Study • Language Arts • Writing Community: Fractured Fairytales , Expository, Fiction, Research, Personal Narrative, Persuasion, Plays/ Reader’s Theatre, Poetry • Word Study • Guided Reading • Reading Response

  8. Homework Homework is very important in a child’s education. The amount of work assigned nightly should not exceed time limits set by Arlington County. Homework assignments are based on concepts and/or procedures that have been taught in class. Grade 5 = 80 minutes • Read 30 minutes. This may include reading for other subjects.

  9. Fifth Grade Discipline Policy The fifth grade discipline policy is based on a positive reward system, rather than a negative consequence system. With this system, students earn rewards (OSPs - Outstanding Student Points) for exemplary behaviors such as always following directions, being respectful to others, showing outstanding effort, and being a positive role model.
