  1. In The Science Room

  2. Today’s Lesson • Introduction to different equipment • Science Equipment Treasure Hunt • Safety in the Science Room • Reading a Meniscus/Measuring Liquids

  3. Science Equipment • To complete Science experiments, you need Science equipment. • Today, we will look at the types of equipment you will be using in class during middle and high school. • Some of the equipment is easily breakable or dangerous, so it needs to be treated with care.

  4. First Activity • Go to the wiki and download the Science Equipment Treasure Hunt. • Complete the activity by yourself or in pairs. • Each person needs to complete one sheet individually, but you can find the equipment together.

  5. Safety in the Science Room • The Science room is different than other rooms. It has many different pieces of equipment, along with water and gas taps!! • Because we complete experiments in the science room, we need to be very careful with safety. • What pieces of equipment are around the room that help make us safer?

  6. Safety Activity • Get into groups of 4 students (there must be 1 boy and girl in each group). • As a group, decide on 5 rules which you think are important for a Science room. • When your group has chosen 5 rules, type them into an email and send them here: fedleym@yis.ac.jp • Next lesson, we will choose as a class our Science rules.

  7. Measuring Liquids • In Science, we need to measure liquids accurately. This can be done by reading the meniscus. • The meniscus is the line which shows the level of the water in a measuring cylinder. • Liquids are not totally flat because of surface tension against the sides. http://faculty.clintoncc.suny.edu/faculty/michael.gregory/files/bio%20101/bio%20101%20lectures/chemistry/chemistr.htm

  8. Reading A Meniscus • Fill water into a measuring cylinder • You eyes should be at the same level as the water to make the measurement as accurate as possible. • Read the bottom of the line (in the middle) for the most accurate reading.

  9. Completing the Activity • In a small measuring cylinder, about half fill it with water. • Read the meniscus and record the amount of water in the measuring cylinder. • Repeat with the measuring cylinder being around ¼ and ¾ full/
