Well, you can with… Flickr!
What is Flickr? • Flickr is an online photo publishing site. • It allows you to post personal pictures and multimedia shows on the web so that they may be viewed by others. • The user creates photos albums that are either private or public. Users can even host discussions on the pictures. • Flickr allows you to create, publish, and view online photo/multimedia showcases WORLD WIDE!!!
Introducing… Flickr! • Flickr.com is blocked for TCBOE computers. • The disclaimer… • As with most other things on the Web, no one can guarantee with absolute certainty the quality or appropriateness of the content on Flickr. • It is free as long as you don’t publish more than 100MB of images a month. • However, if you download a software editing program, then you can easily post 500 images without worry!!
Niagara Falls, NY Let’s say that after a vacation in Niagara Falls, I wanted to share my pictures with a friend in London, A friend in Rome, and a class in Cairo. Instead of emailing each picture to each group, and losing the ownership of the files, I post them to my Flickr account and allow them to view them via the internet.
uploading • Once you activate your account at Flickr, uploading is easy. • Just click the upload link, browse your files, and select the pictures that you wish to upload. • This is rather simple to do because Flickr allows you to upload more than one picture at a time! • After selecting your pictures, complete the upload and start writing captions!!!
So what can you do? • Educational technology teacher David Jacks blogs about ways to use Flickr in the classroom. http://tinyurl.com/38wsm5 • Create presentations and slide shows • Virtual field trips • Illustrate stories, lessons, and poetry • Document school trips • Teach social awareness • Teach geography with Google Earth
annotation • One of the most useful tools • Allows you to add notes to parts of the image simply by dragging a box across an area and typing text into a form. • This allows text to appear as someone drags their mouse across the picture. • Boxes with the annotation appear! http://flickr.com/photos/cogdog/265279980/
annotation? Imagine… Labeling the parts of a flower in science. Teaching the table setting in French. Writing a picture poem in English. Describing the Civil War from the battlefield. Doing the statistics of a population at a concert.
To End… • Flickr is not just a web tool for sharing pictures. • With the right objectives, it can become an inexpensive teaching tool that opens the world to our students. • The ability to share experiences with others outside the usual environment is… PRICELESS!!
