Summary of Future Plans Teaching: Continue to develop our courses with our current ALPs offering new courses where appropriate Develop relationships with new ALPs for courses from our existing portfolio of MSc courses and our undergraduate programmes Use Dubai as a hub to expand the delivery of undergraduate material to new ALPs. Overview of the School • Actuarial Mathematics & Statistics: 18 Academic staff, student population 421 (302 UG, 119 PG) • Computer Science: 26 Academic staff, student population 384 (257 UG, 127 PG) • Mathematics: 26 Academic staff, student population 348 (287 UG, 61 PG)

Mathematics • Malaysia: buoyant recent UG numbers and articulation discussions with Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM), Penang • International students form 60% of the MSc population: strong interest in Libya, and Saudi Arabia • Commitment to African Institute for Mathematical Sciences (South Africa, Ghana): visiting lecturers, joint PhD supervision

Computer Science • China: New undergraduate articulation agreement with Fujian Normal University in Fuzhou (FJNU) • Norway: New contacts under development for undergraduate recruitment • India: Focus on MSc recruitment. Extended visit by Head of School in 2010. • Brazil: Visits in July 2010 to schools and universities for undergraduate and postgraduate recruitment

Computer Science • ALPs in Iran and Cyprus delivering both MSc and UG degrees • Supporting independent learners on distance learning MSc • New initiatives in South Africa (2010) and Jamaica (2011) for distance learning BSc degrees • Dubai • Three MSc degrees currently offered • Investigating BSc Computer Science course

Actuarial Maths & Stats • China: UG articulation agreement with Southwestern University of Finance and Economics (SWUFE) in Chengdu. Annual visits to SWUFE by AMS staff include teaching. • Malaysia: Significant UG recruitment (including advanced entry) and regular visits

External Programmes Background • SML External Programmes currently has over 2,000 students studying on the Heriot-Watt Management Programme. • Students can take one of five undergraduate ordinary degrees: • BA Accountancy; • BA Accountancy and Finance; • BA Business and Finance; • BA Management; and, • Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA)

External Programmes Modules and Materials: • There are a total of 35 modules available, 30 of which are synoptically-linked for assessment, 5 which are stand-alone. • Modules cover the core modules required for each degree pathway and selected optional modules from on-campus which are seen as most relevant to the International market. • Module materials have been specifically designed, authored and produced by School of Management & Languages. • The External Programmes also delivers an English for Business Studies and English for Science Studies courses via the ALP network. These courses are aimed at bridging the gap between an applicant’s level of English and the HWU minimum entry requirements; it does not result in a qualification.

External Programmes Key Facts about the Management Programme • Management Programme launched in 1998. • There are two exam sessions (diets) per year (in June and December) where ever module examination can be taken • First Approved Learning Partner (ALP) established in 1999 and now 15 approved institutions in 11 countries. • 1,300 Ordinary Degrees awarded • 40 Awards of Distinction to date. • Average student pass rate across all module sets is 72%, with continual improvement on annual basis. • Largest Undergraduate Distributed Learning Programme available from Scottish Universities. • Exams are held in approved centres in over 40 countries worldwide, and examined to the same high standards as students attending the University in the UK
